The Breeders Cup Marathon ran for the first time last year over 1m4f is now going to be run over a new trip of 1m6f on the AW track.
Anybody think this is a good idea, for us in Europe it is ideal as it means we could virtually gurantee the winner of it every year.
The race will begin at the chute in the back straight so horses have longer to settle into a rhythmn.
March 21, 2009 at 07:56 #217651Im not so sure it would work out well for europeans. Quite a lot of our better middle distance sires arent really as effective on the all weather and it may work out better for the yanks, as they breed a lot more horses for that sort of surface and just need to have a couple that stay.
What I think we’ll end up with however is a race of lower quality, why not just make it 1m6f on turf, like a breeders cup St Leger.
March 21, 2009 at 16:16 #217690No changes. But I think the locals will be better prepared this year.
Muhannak was the picture perfect all-weather stayer, and if he returns to defend his crown I think he would be hard to beat again.
March 21, 2009 at 20:10 #217741You never know Myles, Maybe a few of the Antipodeans may be tempted to have a try at the race if they dont fancy having a go at the Australian Cesarewitch.
March 21, 2009 at 21:41 #217749Should be an annual shoo-in, but the constant alterations to a format that wasn’t broken are getting a bit tiresome.
What next, a Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for fillies foaled in May?March 21, 2009 at 21:55 #217753i would think that more Europeans would go for this race this year-especially as it’s worth more money in real terms because of the £ dropping so much.
Will be interesting to see who has the advantage when the race is run on dirt at Churchill in 2010
March 21, 2009 at 22:56 #217759Yeats would hack up assuming he handled the surface, I bet Coolmore would love too show him off in the USA for his swansong.
At least somone has had the sense too give America dirt and alweather stayers too have a chance too shine on BC day. And it makes the race wroter look less like complete tits in european eyes for naming a twelve furlong race, a marathon, then given they race race quarter horses (which is a bloody joke), twelve is a long way for them
March 21, 2009 at 23:01 #217761Pro ride guys!

Coolmore would entertain the Breeders’ Cup Marathon, only if they wished to advertise Yeats as a stallion prospect in the USA.
No chance.
Neil, I couldn’t imagine sires like Encosta De Lago, Flying Spur, Redoute’s Choice are among the list of qualified sires able to compete in the Breeders’ Cup. Remember, Starcraft had to pay a $1,000,000 fee because the sire wasn’t recognised by the Breeders’ Trust (or whatever it’s called).
