Charlie at his worst
May 13, 2007 at 07:22 #58748How about Bounce Back in the 2004 National. Most horses call it a day after falling, but after falling at Bechers, BB got up and bravely (ok, maybe stupidly ;) ) continued to persevere with his jumping riderless, falling twice more along the way.
May 13, 2007 at 10:41 #58749Little Docklands Express derves a mention, no great shakes over hurdles what a star he was over fences. Even managed a courageous 4th in the National despite the trip and fences.
May 14, 2007 at 11:24 #58750Tiznow, epic race against the Iron Horse in the Breeders Cup classic.

May 14, 2007 at 17:01 #58752I’m not sure of the criteria here.
Some horses are nominated just for winning certain races.
How many of them demanded "bravery"? Can horses be brave, or they just responding to being punished? Does that make them brave? Are we romanticising cruelty?
More questions than answers on this one from me, I’m afraid…

May 14, 2007 at 18:40 #58754If by bravery you mean a consistent will to win spread over years, I don’t see how you can do much better than Desert Orchid unless it’s Night Nurse.
May 14, 2007 at 19:23 #58755They were both top class horses, but I’m not sure if they were the bravest.
I think Crisp’s run in the 1973 grand national was brave.
May 14, 2007 at 19:47 #58756there are 3 horses that spring to mind, one of them was brilliant, Dessy!!!
The other 2 were not quite so brilliant, but had alot of courage in my opinion, Red Marauder winning in the mud, and Rooster Booster, who consistantly ran his heart out in races not run to suit year after year. Particularly game efforts come to mind in the tote gold trophey and in the xmas hurdle where he attempted to make all at a blistering gallop. Never before have i been in a grandstand where EVERYONE was willing a horse to keep going quite so much!!!
May 14, 2007 at 20:38 #58757I’m as big a fan of Rooster Booster as you’ll find but I’d never call him brave.
I often find myself identifying horses that show a tremendous will to get to the front at the end of a race or to repel challengers as ones to hae on my side on the betting front but I’m not so sure about calling them brave either. Competitive, yes. Brave? Hmm….
Were both Grundy and Bustino "brave" in that King George?

Ted
Totally agree.
In my long time in racing, which predates Arkle , I cannot recall a braver peformance from a horse.
Had he not had a monkey on his back, he would surely have been the bravest winner of the then most arduous race of all.
May 15, 2007 at 09:51 #58759I always think that somewhat diminutive horses that are successful jumpers are particularly brave. Cavvies Clown is one that springs to mind (although memory might be serving me badly here)
Fair along is a very decent current example. Lovely thing
But cant argue with Dessie….
