steeplechasing i did say they will then balance their book(to a certain degree) by pushing out a couple if they have taken their whack out of a horse

Have a look on course now,its 7/4 all across the boards, not like the old days when you’d try and nick half a point or a point by looking around

Try taking the same Betfair offer simultaneously across a hundred PCs and see how far you get.

That’s my point – how far do you get? You don’t get what you want, that’s for sure.

NW – they can push others out, but can’t be sure of getting the stakes they need to balance the book. Most bookmakers, day-to-day, lay the first three in the betting, occasionally four, and take very little for anything else.

i see what your saying but come on these ‘books’ now are run by betfair prices, robots the majority of them.I know they have mouths to feed, but just wish now and then one or two would break ranks and say we’re gonna get this(or try to)

You get what’s on the screen if nobody else has got there first. That’s all that seems to be requested in the petition.

…And what would be the reaction of punters if bookmakers offered to lay just £2 worth @ 5/1?

Punters on betfair can say how much they are prepared to lose, which can be very little.

Punters asking for everyone to be able to get on to win £500 from bookmakers at the advertised price – is totally different to how one punter can lay how much he/she wants to potentially just one punter on betfair at the advertised price.

There very very few BOOKMAKERS now.
    They all have opinions!!
And most of them wouldn’t be able to make a decent book even if they were playing with my or your money.

It is all computer programmes and limits nowadays and anyone that thinks otherwise is starting two points behind!!

Don’t get me wrong, I too remember and loved the days when bookmakers “took a view.”

But, as steeplechasing said, such bookies were effectively punters and many went bust.

The way to make money as a bookie is to not take a view, don’t lay anything to lose too much until the market settles down, and lay your biggest bets near the Off, effectively at starting price, and give preference to good customers (losers) over bad customers.

That way the margins grind down most punters over time.

It’s a game for accountants, not gamblers.

A lot of stand out prices (better than the exchanges at the time) simply aren’t available to people who bet professionally and if you’re any good at betting you may end up having to use the exchanges where, for the same reasons, there often isn’t much volume until the market has settled down near the Off.
