Always loved Annie; she was electric, and delighted to see her retired safely. Slight regrets she didn’t win more; would surely have won Jezki’s Champion Hurdle. And i would have loved to see her over a fence
May 16, 2017 at 22:18 #1301070Sad to see her go. What a wonderful mare -what a wonderful racehorse period, Annie Power has been. Unfortunately she will be remembered for all the wrong reasons by many. It’s such a shame she wasn’t campaigned better by Mullins, she could have gone down as one of the greatest Champion Hurdlers, rather than merely a great. Happy retirement Annie.

May 18, 2017 at 21:24 #1301319Like everyone else whose posted, I too am glad that Annie is safely retired. A fabulous mare, no question, whose quality was only shown once she was finally allowed to compete with, and smash, the CH geldings. I would have loved to have seen her campaigned like that from the outset, rather than trying to turn her into a staying hurdler, or keeping her to beating up her own sex Quevega-style. Like others too I’d have loved to have seen her over a fence, but I can understand why connections didn’t want to risk what had obviously become more of a family pet.
Looking back on her career though, no matter how stellar, I still have that sense that she could have achieved so much more, and that she would have done so but for being in the same ownership/stable and at the same time as the other glitterati. This is the first time that I’ve felt this about a retiring champion NH horse – and it’s always what’s separated out the jumps from the flat for me. But if the best horses are in the same yards and same ownership then this is increasingly what will happen. Horses will be campaigned to ensure maximum prize money for trainers and to capture the owners’/trainers’ awards and stats at the key festivals, not to compare the best with the best. For me, Annie was the best jumps race mare since Dawn Run, but she never really got the full opportunity to show that on the track, which is a crying shame.
May 22, 2017 at 20:00 #1301853Happy to report that Annacotty has been retired today, I understand.
His greatest day came when nudging out another tough warrior, Buywise, to win the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham in November 2015, providing Ian Popham with the second-biggest win of his career.
Of course, the biggest was when the pair collected the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day of 2013.
May 22, 2017 at 22:36 #1301864Thanks for the news on Annacotty Quelle Farce. Hope the horse is ok and a happy retirement to him. Seems a shame to me though, only 9 and the handicapper has at very long last relented and dropped him 6 lbs since his last run.
June 27, 2017 at 17:07 #1306708November Handicap and Ebor winner Litigant has been officially retired.
A gutsy, fragile but likeable horse who served his backers (of which I was never one unfortunately for my wallet) well.
June 27, 2017 at 19:14 #1306715The admirable Medicean Man ran his 78th and final race in the Kings Stand last week. Wishing him along and happy retirement

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 4, 2017 at 20:54 #1307676Just in case anyone missed the news, Quest For More was retired by connections last week.
He provided one of the best moments of 2016 when gallantly running down Vazirabad in the Cadran, a race I will remember fondly for a long while.
Happy retirement to a very popular horse.
July 5, 2017 at 09:04 #1307706Good decision. He hasn’t looked the same horse this year. Happy retirement Quest for More
July 25, 2017 at 21:26 #1311360It would be folly of me if I didn’t mention and pay great tribute to the absolute legend that is Hawkeyethenoo who has today been retired by his owners.
A 3 year old gelding rated 54 and with a solitary win in a class 6 apprentice handicap at Beverly to his name when sent to Jim Goldie from Mick Easterby in 2009, the Scottish trainer managed to raise Hawkeye’s rating to 112 just 3 year’s later and his profile to one of the sport’s most popular athletes.
He retires with a record of 9 wins from 80 starts and earnings of nearly £400,000 helped by such victories in races like the SkyBet Dash, Victoria Cup and Stewards Cup. He also came 2nd in the Epsom Dash, 2nd in the Champions Sprint, 3rd in the Wokingham, 4th in the Sprint Cup, 5th in the July Cup and 6th in the Diamond Jubilee in a brilliant career.
On a personal level, I loved this horse from an early stage helped by his tough attitude, likable trainer and dash of class. His win in the 2012 Stewards Cup is one of my favourite memories from horse racing, I had as much as I could get on him and was in attendance to absolutely go ballistic when he crossed the line. A day that will stay with me for a long time.
I hope Hawkeye has a long, healthy and well deserved retirement.
July 25, 2017 at 21:51 #1311364Great news Charles, and a real old favourite of mine too.
That 2012 Stewards Cup brings back happy memories for me too, as I had him in The Exacta that day with Imperial Guest, and it was a very nice payout, happy days. Bet the old boy many times since, and I hope he a long retirement
July 26, 2017 at 01:21 #1311380Absolutely love Hawkeyethenoo and have had so much enjoyment watching him, especially his Stewards Cup success and before that seeing him win at Newmarket. I remember he was pulling his handlers arms out in the paddock he was having a real job keeping him straight he knew what he was there for and always ran to the best of his ability. He shouldn’t have won the race that day because he stumbled coming down the Rowley Mile but thankfully got himself back together and went on to beat Michael Stoute’s Enact from the battling mare Angus Newz and dear old Genki trained by Roger Charlton.
So pleased that he has been retired safe and sound, it would be hard to find a more charismatic and popular horse than Hawkeyethenoo. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 26, 2017 at 05:38 #1311382Goldie, who had the first three home in a race, only a couple of days ago, also trained another favourite horse called Quito, who you could back with some confidence if there was some give in the ground.
August 16, 2017 at 01:28 #1314047Great read, good story for racing and for Avon Breeze (have not seen a race of hers, yet). A winning farewell and of to the paddocks for a hopefully long retirement and with easy foalings. https://www.racingpost.com/bloodstock/bloodstock-news/52-and-out-in-foal-avon-breeze-ends-career-in-style/296215
Best Wishes

Wasn’t the late David Chapman ‘Mr Quito’ or am I remembering this wrong?
