That grand old frontrunner Loose Chips has been retired at the age of 14. Wishing him a long and happy retirement, it is certainly well-deserved

Thanks Marlingford, nice that he managed a win in his final season. 2017/18 seems to be his only season without a win.

Does anyone know how Dvinsky is enjoying his retirement? Hoping that the old boy is still about, (the horse in my profile) sure many won’t remember the old boy, he only raced to a moderate level, but was a constant fixture on the all weather. He finally retired when he was 12 with what I believe is the record amount of race course starts in the UK (please correct me if wrong), numbering 231 with 168 on the AW. He won 19 races and in the front three 86 times and earned about 120k in prize money. Not too shabby for a horse that only peaked at around 90 on official ratings. I hope you’ll forgive my big up of the old boy but he deserves all his recognition.

I haven’t been on this thread for a while , even though it always gladdens my heart to hear about these great old boys and girls getting out in one piece , to enjoy an honourable and enjoyable retirement. I think , as tbracing has stated , it would be great if Dvinsky was enjoying himself , as that is one hell of a workload the was put in !

Very sad that Mohaather has retired so early, but at least he is in one piece and hopefully will be as successful as a sire as he was on the racecourse.

How long would racing continue if every single horse including juveniles were microchipped and tagged so that their life journey and disposal after racing was entirely transparent and known to all?
These ones on this thread are the lucky ones.

All TBs are microchipped, and have been for about the last 20 years or so. Their life journey is an issue though, for sure. In Ireland we have to have an equine premises number (basically a herd number), and I imagine that tracking similar to cattle is not far away.

Not meaning to be controversial there Louise 12 as you already said there is a problem with their journey. Just playing devil’s advocate.

No problem sporting sam… I can’t solve the problem I’m afraid. I was just letting you know that they are chipped already. In theory that gives some traceability. However, horse ownership is not as clear cut as people might imagine. In theory a passport denotes ownership, but it’s very much a gentleman’s agreement. This is why these things sometimes end up in court. You might remember Mossey Joe being subject to a dispute between brother and sister – if I remember correctly, she said he gave her a share for breaking the horse in. As soon as the horse became valuable, that became a problem. I digress, but you get the picture. Ownership is less than clear cut, especially when a horse is out of training. We used to freeze brand our ponies, back in the day, and when I loaned my pony to someone and they sold her, the new owner contacted Farmkey to transfer ownership, they contacted me and the fraud was exposed. That would not happen with chips and passports. Perhaps we have gone backwards.

Unfortunately the lockdown in March seems to have delayed things but the link is included in the article for when it starts operation.

Only a certain % of TBs reach the track, and if I breed one and sell it to my friend as a riding horse, that is not recorded anywhere. If that action is repeated a few times, and then the horse is left at the side of the road to starve, only the breeder is recorded. Obviously breeders need to be responsible, but they cannot control everything in the chain. It might be right that they ultimately ‘own’ the animal, but I don’t believe there is any procedure around this. I tend to think that the visibility of a freeze mark would discourage neglect. Interestingly the RSPCA say that it ‘can cause significant suffering’. In my experience it caused no reaction (the whole riding school was done, and my mare was a very sensitive creature). I’m sure there are exceptions, but then not all foals take kindly to having a fat needle stuck in their neck for chipping either.

Another setback this morning for Sizing John, so sensible decision made, and he’s been retired.

Shame about Sizing John, but he had his day in the sun; the way the top horses are campaigned now, his treble is unlikely to be emulated.

Just read of RTV’s site that Lady Buttons has been retired after sustaining an injury.

She was a really good mare. Maybe a notch below absolute top class but a good, tough and consistent performer and equally adept over hurdles and fences. I would love to own a horse like her!

I hope she has a happy retirement and if her foals are half as good as her they will be well worth watching.
