They’ve been declining gradually for years. Anyone can have a bad year or two but this decline is too deep now for them ever to fully recover from IM O.

AP McCoy would of got Lush Lashes home on Saturday.
August 4, 2008 at 17:17 #176073They are still playing catch up from Dubai Milleniums death. They saw him as an equine figurehead.
Imagine Coolmore without Saddlers Wells or Danehill. It was always going to take a while.

But then they’d still have Danehill Dancer and Galileo and High Chaparral, Rock Of Gibraltar, Montjeu etc
Who do Godolphin have – Cape Cross?
They are leagues apart.
August 4, 2008 at 18:41 #176082Im a huge fan of coolmore, compared with godolphin/darley anyways, but I have to say that so far High Chaparral has been pretty poor at stud, on what his fuirst crop have done on the racetrack to date. Rock Of Gibraltar wasnt great either. Danehill dancer is quite consistent at knocking up horses for good or worse ground, but not that often horses that are exceptional, like danehill could do before him.
Coolmores elite for me would have to be Giants Causeway, has knocked up almsot everything going between 6f and 1m2f, turf / dirt, colts/fillies, juveniles/3yos+, flat/jumps, possibly the best sire they have IMO, possibly joint with Galileo.
Montjeu has been incredible also, his record speaks for itself.
Galileo as a stallion has been transformed by the two bolger horses (and possibly Rip Van Winkle too) and looks awesome at the minute as a classic contender making machine.
One Cool Cats first crop looked brilliant at the start of the season and have went a bit belly up since the better ground has been here but may bring out another wave of form later in the season, Worth keeping an eye on.
Godolphin/darley have made some shrewd investments in recent years IMO by buying up some of the best coolmore bred horses, Doyen, Refuse To Bend, Shamardal, Authorized, Teofilo and New Approach to name a few. They have also bought Shirrocco, Manduro, Discreet Cat etc. I wouldnt go writing godolphin off just yet as they have some nice horses at stud now, some of whom I can’t believe coolmore have let go unpurchased.
August 5, 2008 at 08:55 #176134Ian – without Saddlers Wells or Danehill there would be none of the horses you have listed.
We will never know how important a sire Dubai Millenium would have been, but i can’t help seeing the moment of his death as the day Godolphin stopped moving forward. It broke their heart.
August 5, 2008 at 15:05 #176177As I said before the race, the only way I could see HTH winning the race was if allowed to dictate a slow pace (by a sprinter, out of a sprinter, who was in turn by a sprinter) and that is what happened. I could not believe the other jockeys rides. Richard Hills did take it up but went even slower if anything. Not good enough to beat Lush Lashes at a mile, so why make the race in to a test of speed at 1m2f?
Though I do not believe the worst culprit was Manning this time. Lush Lashes can pull and did so early on, he did the right thing and settled her in. Possibly should’ve made a move earlier, I don’t know.
It is Durcan that ought to hang his head in shame. On a horse proven at 1m4f, capable of making it’s own running (went for home far enough out at Newbury). Yet was content to let a sprint bred animal turn the race in to just that, a three furlong sprint. And giving it a head start too. Not only was Passage Of Time up against one horse with speed, but Lush Lashes, Muthabara and Heaven Sent all had mile speed too. Mind boggling, though Henry Cecil and the Prince’s racing manager should take some blame too.
Ryan Moore asked the impossible coming from that position, against top class opposition in a slowly run race. Yet another recent blunder from this top class jockey, rapidly turning in to a Spencer clone rather than what looked a Fallon replacement last season. Heaven Sent was another who’s shown capable of racing prominently.
This was many of these fillies best chance of winning a Group 1 in this country, squandered.
It was obvious Murtagh and Coolmore wanted a test of speed at the trip and as on most occasions this season, allowed their own way. In my opinion they had the 5th best horse in the race, but by race tactics and foolhardy rivals, made her in to the best horse. Well done them.
I have seen jockeys getting it wrong before, but never so many in one race. Have the sense to react to what is happening during a race lads. Do not get in to one mindset, thinking these are our tactics whatever the circumstances. So come on all you little men out there, give Ballydoyle something to think about and use your brains!Mark
Value Is EverythingAugust 5, 2008 at 16:40 #176194Halfway to heaven for me Her guinneas win & 3rd to Zarkova at 4/1 is the value for me she also has a longer rest than the hard race Lush lashes had at Ascot imo.
i was away for a few days so sorry about late reply, but although i was very happy with outcome my orginal post was a bit of the mark i think i was very lucky to collect do people still think LL would have won giving a clear run?
