I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
January 24, 2008 at 20:19 #137509What happened DJ?

It was a shocker wasn’t it DJ – It’s been debated quite a lot on ATR but I don’t think anyone has mentioned how wide he raced the horse. Why did he travel so far wide throughout the race in a smallish field? – baffling.

January 24, 2008 at 20:59 #137521Well, it couldnt be in search of better ground.

No idea to be honest, rather strange tactics.
January 24, 2008 at 21:10 #137525You want to see his twin brother. He is brutal.

January 24, 2008 at 21:48 #137537He’s actually called Billy Cray not Kray

he’s already won twice on Justcallmehandsome and no-one said anything then. do people/punters just moan when horses lose?

Just to tell you my own position on this Jim

I’m certainly not moaning, just pointing out that in my opinion he rode a poor race. Take a look at it’s run prior to tonight Jim. Mr Cray popped the horse out and rode it prominent, three horse widths wide all the way round, put the race to bed a few furlongs out and hugged the rail in the straight.
Now have a look at tonight’s ride. Held it up in last position off a very very slow pace, and kept the horse amazingly wide throughout. The horse was never in a challenging position.
In my opinion it was just a poor ride – I’m not bothered about it as poor rides happen every day.

January 24, 2008 at 22:05 #137542Mikky it depends on which way you look at it, his horse reared up at the start, so maybe he was giving it time to get back into the race, I agree he stayed wide but again maybe to give his horse a chance of getting back into the race, he’d have had no chance if he tried to go through the field, had this not been a fav and a 10/1 chance not much would have been said.
for the record I fancied Casablanca Minx which was a non runner, my other choice was Justcallmehandsome.
January 24, 2008 at 22:09 #137545I take your point Jim, especially as I hadn’t noticed it had reared up at the start.
Lesson for myself: Watch the race a few times before being critical

No I don’t just moan when horses just lose. I tend to moan when I have doubts as to whether a horse has been ridden on his merits. It’s easy to say he’s just an apprentice, he’s learning, but I think that would be a bit of a cop out to be honest. As you say Billy Cray had won on the horse the last twice, do you not think it puzzling that different tactics were adopted on this occasion compared to those last 2 wins? Do you not also find it puzzling why he was still on the bridle turning for home with about 8 lengths to make up. The fact that the horse reared slightly is immaterial in my opinion. The amount of ground it may or may not have cost him is neglibile and 2 horses, including the winner, missed the kick by further.
I’m not sure how the argument of staying wide helps the horse get back into the race, he was ‘in’ the race until restrained to a wide position.
January 25, 2008 at 00:01 #137559Individuals see things differently David, for me there wasn’t much wrong with the ride apart from the fact the horse didn’t help it’s chances at the start, if he’d have managed to rush the horse to join the leaders he’d have almost certainly have emptied with a furlong to run and still been beaten.
If you think it was a dodgy or bad ride for whetever reason then I have no problems with that but I didn’t see too much wrong.
January 25, 2008 at 00:06 #137560Jim
I’m happy to agree to disagree. Rather ironically, if you check out the Kicking King thread, you’ll see I’m happy to have a moan about jockeys even when they win!
January 25, 2008 at 00:13 #137562I’d agree it was a complete reversal of previously successful riding tactics on the horse. For sure it was a very poor ride and it didn’t look good. Riding to orders I suppose
