It’s harder to go into a barn of foals and pick out the top bunch than it is to go into a barn of two year olds and do the same. When you’re buying a two year old you’re more sure of what you’re buying.March 21, 2013 at 15:48 #433702True but you would of thought it must of been
drastic
tho to leap like that.
March 21, 2013 at 15:59 #433705Why the big difference, to hit $1,800,000? It could be:
Two rich determined people wanted him. After $400,00 there were only two bidders throwing punch after punch. Lots of rich people have the “I will not be beaten” attitude.
He is a well-bred colt, Smart Strike is a well-established top class sire, and his dam, Mini Sermon, was a Group 2 winner, and placed in other Group races, from a family containing other Group horses.
The six months development (and shaping) since its previous sale is 25% of its life so far. That work input at that time prior to a Spring Sale as a two year old, can make a big difference. By all accounts he was the best looking horse in the sale and had the most visits at preview.
He ran a sub ten-second furlong at the breeze-up for the sale. Its a positive to be well-bred, it’s a positive to be good looking, but it really helps to KNOW that the horse can run fast.

My Miss Aurelia
Rachel AlexandraCould be a star then.
March 21, 2013 at 20:53 #433730My Miss Aurelia is a Stonestreet homebred. Curlin and Rachel Alexandra were bought privately while they were racing – Curlin for $3.5 million after his maiden win, Rachel for an undisclosed (very large) sum of money after her Kentucky Oaks wins.

Actually he ran a co-bullet work (tied for the fastest of all the horses in the sale), and a horse with a bullet workout is usually the one who goes for big money at these 2yo sales.
