I don’t think it was his
age
that got McCririck fired so much as his
image
. C4 doesn’t want this to be the face of horse racing:

I’m sure they’d be fine with an older gentleman or lady who has hair, clothes and opinions that aren’t stuck in the 19th century.
November 13, 2013 at 22:05 #458236I’m a fan of characters myself.
November 13, 2013 at 22:24 #458238One word cost McCririck any chance of winning this case…..Greed and Old Johnny is renowned for it.Common sense prevailed today and that these days is as rare as McCririck is to normality. His next move is to ‘sell’ his story and sadly the gutter press will pay stupid money for his stupid rantings but once a celebrity always a celebrity and thats how they can afford to live like they do.
Whilst the Fat Buffoon sits back and sips Champagne and reflects on how he would have spent his Millions my thoughts are with those Phillipinos who are dehumanised by the West as ‘Oh well they can deal with their plight’.How fickle we are when we fail to acknowledge that these humans no different to us are homeless, short on food and water and have lost loved ones and have little hope of improving their situation whilst McCririck licks his wounds!
November 13, 2013 at 23:29 #458242I think he got a bit carried away with his on screen persona at times, but he’s a good old stick at heart.A bit like Michael Joseph Pennington found himself turning into Johnny Vegas.
Big Mac has been a loyal husband to ‘The Booby’ for many years and she wouldn’t have put up with him if he really was like he’s perceived by those that have never even met him.
November 14, 2013 at 00:14 #458246Nothing left to report in The Ring anyway, save the clicks of licensed arbers.
November 14, 2013 at 00:27 #458248This was the man who was offered police protection at the 1990 Grand National, the day after telling viewers of Granada’s Up Front programme: “Liverpool is a cancer on the face of England.”
He also said: “It makes me very angry when journalists write ‘He’s actually got a heart of gold and, underneath all the bluster, he’s a nice chap’. He’s not a nice chap. I make no pretence about it – I’m not a pleasant person!”
November 14, 2013 at 00:40 #458250He’s hardly going to admit that the journalists have sussed him out, is he?
November 14, 2013 at 07:58 #458257Talk about kicking a man when he’s down

There is a world of difference between kicking someone who is down through no fault of their own and kicking someone who is down because of their own actions.

The former is a no-no, the latter fair game = just my opinion of course.
As TAPK very sensibly points out there are many, many others far more deserving of sympathy.
November 14, 2013 at 09:50 #458260Recall mentioning this on the original thread discussing this ill-conceived Claim, but what little milk of human kindness I still have does bubble with some concern for John McCririck’s mental health
This photo from the RP, which is presumably recent, just bolsters my opinion that he’s troubled by depression: the hang-dog expression and the empty ‘thousand yard stare’ tell the tale and there’s several other photos displaying a similar sad countenance
http://images.racingpost.com/2013/Oct/86561.jpg
So while I too go with the flow on this thread and essentially hope it’s a last goodbye and good-riddance I do hope he can come to terms with his demons and enjoy a peaceful retirement
An unpleasant man and an unhappy one too
IMO
November 14, 2013 at 10:32 #458261There was never a chance McCririck would win his case.
His ridiculous antics, increasingly frail appearance and faltering delivery meant he was well overdue to be shipped out.
His age wasn’t necessarily the be all and the end all. Several TV performers older than he is appear to be far more in control of their faculties.
His obnoxious attitude to the watching racegoers and long-suffering colleagues would have been enough reason to have dispensed with his services years earlier. Sadly, despite his wealth of knowledge, his other failings had become far too apparent.
He did himself no favours at all during the tribunal itself and was regularly told to moderate his "grandstanding". He undoubtedly got the backs up of those hearing the case (ironically women) and I’m sure they would have been very unimpressed by his arrogant antics.
He had a very good innings, working into his 70s in an image-conscious industry, and he ought to be very grateful he lasted as long as he did.
No doubt the manner of the ending of his connection with Channel 4 racing was brusque but he got what he deserved. His own arrogant, short-tempered and dismissive attitude to others should have prepared him for a taste of his own medicine.
Channel 4 racing is better without him, despite the lightweight nature of the current betting coverage. Overgrown and bullying schoolboys who like throwing their considerable weight around invariably get their come-uppance and he has finally got his.
The more I see of the now not-so-new Channel 4 coverage, the more I like it.
Graham Cunningham does a great job and the whole team, including Rishi Persad, seems much more at ease and confident now. Overall, the new team is a big improvement and I am only too pleased to say that my misgivings this time last year have been proved largely unfounded.
I still can’t stand the fingers pressing buttons on the touch screen though….
Overall I agree with you and prefer the new presenting team. I enjoy Cunningham and only miss Cattermole. Have never been able to stand Persad on any channel.
However viewing figures are reportedly well down. I’m sure that doesn’t bother the Arabs who sponsor the coverage, but may well concern the advertisers.
November 14, 2013 at 11:58 #458273As a 46yo employee I don’t feel I have had a set-back from McCririck losing his case and I certainly wasn’t rooting for him to win (would he have shared his £3m with me and other 30-70yos?)
Having had a brief read through the judgement, I thought that a couple of people didn’t come out too well.
Jamie Aitchenson was described as "weak and found it difficult to take and standby decisions"
and Highflyer (and in turn Andrew Franklin) on Lesley Graham "her days were given to her as a favour by the producer"
and "…the approach to refreshing the Presenter set up had been un-ambitious (and that old loyalties may affect decisions…"
I don’t think I’m coming up with anything new but it seems that C4 / IMG handled the whole thing badly (wonder if JM will now try for wrongful dismissal?) and that Highflyer just wanted to keep the status quo and not change anything.

This picture clearly shows that McCririck not only dresses like a Victorian Detective ‘At the Races’ but in Civvy St too,I thought his fashion sense was purely part of his Racing character but alas No,he dresses like an idiot all the time with half a dozen watches strapped to his member……..It would appear he struggles to tell the time and yet he knows a ‘Coral diver’ when he sees one! I believe this man is quite a devious person, the sort that cant look you in the eye,the sort that thinks Money is the root of all………..The cigars he chuffs on,the 1st class BA tickets to America and the Dom Perignon served in it.Women are nothing more than a necessity and his Sexist comments put Jim Davison to shame. No I’m afraid if I wrote a thread titled ‘Best result of the year’ this would be my answer to it.Geez had he won do you really think he’d champion the ageds cause for working till you drop? Nope,he’d be offski on a spending spree and any old timer who gets in his way would be physically barged past by old numpty draws himself, the guys a complete ignoramous, with No social skills whatsoever and worse than anything else……by far is that he picks his nose………………………………………………………………………………………………….and eats it.Ffs
November 14, 2013 at 13:21 #458277I was just enjoying a Pot Noodle in my lunch break when you wrote that last bit TAPK, it’s gone straight in the bin.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...November 14, 2013 at 13:47 #458281All the claptrap that McCririck has come out with about ‘letting everyone down’ is typical egotistical phoney nonsense that surely he can’t expect us to believe that he believes……….it reminds me of all that ‘boo me boo me’ nonsense he comes out with to the audience on things like Big Brother and describing himself as a failed this and a failed that…….
Its all a load of false modesty of the most cynical nature.
McCririck wasn’t making a stand for anyone but himself…I have observed him for many years on the racecourse and off camera he is sullen has no time for anyone and appears full of ego and self importance.
I for one am not sorry in the least that his gravy train has ground spectacularly to a halt.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 14, 2013 at 20:59 #458327This thread is really, really, ugly. I’m really shocked at the real glee shining through in some of the posts.
Why is Mac a "Charlatan" Steve? He might not be to your taste, but he knows his stuff.
And well said Mr. Pilsen.
