Twenty, yep twenty, people on this committee, and not a one of them represents punters or people who pay to go in the gate.
April 13, 2015 at 16:39 #884669You could argue that Steve Mellish and lee Mottershead fulfil this role to an extent. Also, punters representation is a good soundbyte but how do they choose who represents punters ? there is no punters organisation.
April 13, 2015 at 20:00 #885055Simon Clare is only interested in profits for his masters so why have him on it ?
April 14, 2015 at 12:28 #886436Hmmmmm…. I wonder if the report will conclude that everyday jumps racing isn’t “economically viable” and that more all weather racing should replace it?
April 14, 2015 at 13:06 #886454Gladiateur, a more depressing conclusion would be hard to imagine.
April 14, 2015 at 15:05 #886583Committees are often bad ideas, but the good news here is that Ed Gillespie chairs it. Probably the best administrator racing has ever had imo

I totally agree someone with a racing brain who knows what is best for the jumps. I hope and prey they don’t employ Rod Street and the other morons from Racing for Change, had they been involved then more than likely the outcome would be for more all weather racing.
April 14, 2015 at 21:19 #887323A committee of twenty is doomed to failure – I can guarantee that much, regardless of who they are.
Its only hope is if the Chair is an autocrat.

Spot on! In a committee of 20 there will be too many opinions and not enough agreement. Is the intention to review and then come up with little change?
April 19, 2015 at 12:04 #896990Although I’ve tweeted a link to the petition I’m not altogether sure who the BHA could include as a ‘punter’s representative’.
Jim McGrath (ex-Timeform) was, ostensibly, a voice on the BHA that was designated as a representation of ‘the punter’ I guess, but he became so disillusioned with the whole thing that he resigned. I suppose Mellish is the most representative ‘punter’ in there but is it possible for one person to represent the myriad interests of punters, such is the diversity of what a ‘punter’ is?April 19, 2015 at 16:49 #897250Jim McGrath (ex-Timeform) was, ostensibly, a voice on the BHA that was designated as a representation of ‘the punter’ I guess, but he became so disillusioned with the whole thing that he resigned. Do you have to “punt” though to be a “punters” rep? By his own admission Steve Mellish infrequently “punts”.
Must admit I’m puzzled by Niall Hannity’s inclusion, what exactly does he bring to the table?
Mike Catt on the Sunday Forum today said he was surprised there weren’t more bookmakers reps apart from Clare on the committee
April 19, 2015 at 17:02 #897252Do all punters want the same thing? And by punters do we only mean betters in which case who is standing up for racegoers?
Do Betters want smaller fields to make it easier to find the Winner? Certainly as a racegoer I want to see double figure fields flying over the hurdles and fences.
April 19, 2015 at 18:32 #897347If Simon Clare is on the committee then god help punters
