Does anybody know how the BHA have given a race rating for a race that was abandoned?
For example the Grade 2 Noel Novices Chase which is run at Ascot this Friday was abandoned last year. But according to the BHA Jump Pattern and Listed race book, the race for the 2022/23 season was given a rating of 143.25.
December 20, 2023 at 20:07 #1674449I’ve no idea how it’s actually done, but there were five runners declared for the abandoned race. So two places count for the race rating?
At the end of the season, the highest rated two of those five were Thunder Rock (146) and Straw Fan Jack (141).
And the average of 146 and 141 is 143.5.
Could be a coincidence, but ……..

You could check your theory with the Listed Open NH flat race on the same card. Again this was abandoned last year but also has a rating.
What do you think it will be?
December 21, 2023 at 13:40 #1674555Can’t use that method for a NH Flat race, as they don’t publish the ratings.
Thinking about it again this morning, I did wonder if the 143.25 is an average of the rating of the race for previous years, rather than something based on the runners declared for the race that never happened.
December 21, 2023 at 14:05 #1674558Don’t change your mind it seemed plausible.
Your new theory is not right the average for the race for the 3 years previously was 144.17. Here are the ratings for the race for the previous years. Last year the 3 years used to obtain the average race rating were 21/22, 20/21 and 18/19. This was regardless of whether the race was run in 19/20 or not.
22/23 143.25 abandoned
21/22 143
20/21 146.25
19/20 rating not given due to covid
18/19 147.25Try your original theory on another race that was abandoned in 2022 and given a rating by the BHA. The December Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

“Where a race has been abandoned after declaration stage, the Yearly Race Rating is
calculated by taking an average of the four highest rated declarations. Should the race
be abandoned before declaration stage, no Yearly Race Rating will be generated.” - AuthorPosts
