Folks,
Been a punter for many years now but have been stumped by the following that I know the knowledgable people on here would know the answers to;
1. In a five horse race, say I back a horse each way (with high street bookmaker). Two rags are pulled up and two fallers leaving a horse I didnt back to win, finishing alone. Is the place part of the bet a loser aswell as obviously the win part?
2. Similiarly if I backed the horse in the place markets on Betfair. If there is only one placed horse (out of betting on two places) what happens backers and layers alike of the other horses?
3. If I back a straight forecast in the above race scenario betting the winner to beat horse C (fell, no second place finisher) is my bet a loser? Is it fair that with there being no possible winner of the bet the bookmaker cant lose?
Thanks in advance

I will try to help, but im not a 100% confident.
For the 2nd question, if only one finishes, then the horse that wins is onyl payed out for the place. As they dont finish, not money is rreturned on them. It might well answer both questions
I hope this helps, but im not sure if it does, sorry
December 22, 2008 at 03:08 #198563The answer to "1" is yes and I’d imagine the same for the second part, but that would be less my oeuvre.
December 22, 2008 at 03:22 #198567Only horses that finished can be placed, hence any place bet on horses that didn’t finish would be a loser.
December 22, 2008 at 13:57 #198622I think you are looking at this the wrong way and over complicating it.
It is the same answer to all your questions.
If you place any sort of bet in a race and the horse(s) take part but do not win or get placed or fail to complete then it is a losing bet. What happens to the other horses or whether they complete has nothing to do with it.
December 22, 2008 at 14:17 #198623Half the place would stand and be a loser and half the place would be void and stakes returned, on the forecast you would be paid out as a win bet on the winner.
As you say to have it any other way would be unfair, as bookmakers would collect everything on the non finishers while there was a place available.
Similarly in the event of no finishers in a race every single bet would be void and all stakes returned.December 22, 2008 at 14:43 #198626The whole of the place bet is a loser. Laying 199% books to the bots at places like Ayr when it’s a swamp is a particularly pleasing way of making money

I think for the CSF they declare a dividend for the winner with the field.

They do; the dividend is the same as simply backing the winner, although if a bookie offers his own prices with "to finish alone" as an option, then that would change.
