I avoid the 3yos doubt they get in and go with a irish trained runner from trainer who won race before

    MAX DYNAMITE 16/1

Ran a great race at Northumberland plate may drop back in trip no problem for him and think he go very well.

My favourite race of the whole year! Nearly always back 5 year olds.

My two are Battersea at 20/1 and Astronereus at 16/1

I think both horses are open to more improvement and will enjoy the trip/track/field size combination.

I’ll leave the promising looking O’Brien 3yos alone.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Will Thomas Hobson get a 4lb penalty for todays win with it being a hurdle race? He’s on my short list of horses to back thus far if he gets a run.

I was disappointed with Battersea last time, although the jockey said he could never get a run on him.

I think Astronereus is still a solid each-way option.

I read that Fields Of Athenry is more likely to run here than in the Voltigeur and he has to be of interest from the O’Brien stable. He’s not the fastest horse in the world but if his quote of 6/1 for the St Leger with Stan James is anywhere near the mark, then 14/1 for a handicap has to be looked on with affection.

He’s rated 114 and can make the running, so he should be able to stay out of trouble. He certainly seems to stay well and I am sure he will be thereabouts. He would be my final and main bet now.

    Fields Of Athenry 14/1

I expect he will be about 6/1 come raceday. Wire in.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

That’s interesting; I’d thought that he wouldn’t run. My long short list now seems to be Fields of Athenry, Fun Mac, Nearly Caught and Elidor; also difficult to ignore Astonereus now that Dashing Star isn’t running. Going to give the race a proper look tomorrow.

It’s normally hard for 3yo horses to get a high enough rating to get in but Fields of Athenry is rated 114 and has Classic aspirations. He should be a cup horse in time and O’Brien was pretty positive that he will be running in the Ebor.

The 14/1 is gone and there is only a couple of bits of 12/1 left. Generally he is 10/1 but as he firms up as a definite runner and the punters wake up to an O’Brien horse with a Classic entry running in a handicap, confidence will snowball and he’ll be shorter.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

like steve said,FOA will go off around the 6s mark on the day(IF turning up),my one doubt is wether he will be ‘street wise’ enough.Still looked a bit green/quirky to me last time. But at 14s wouldn’t put anyone off.
I will back Ajman Bridge EW,problem i have with my selection he dont win enough. At double figure price should get a run for my money.

Of course it’s all down to the draw as well so I need to get my bets on before that and hope that my lot get a good one. Last time O’Brien had a well fancied 3 year old it got beat by the Mullins bottom weight [with claimer on board] so I reckon that he could find one too good for him. I do think Nearly Caught has been aimed at the race and his form is better than it first appears to be [but, as I said I haven’t looked at the race properly]. This race is really important to me cause I tend to do well with it and the year that I don’t will see me finally acknowledge that I’ve totally lost the knack of finding winners in these long distance handicaps

Scattergun approach; Pallasator, Elidor, Blue Surf, Nearly Caught, Astronereus and Fun Mac. Away next week so needed to place my bets now. FoA now 8/1 and too short for me. Will feel chuffed if my horses at least run [how about Elidor with Willie TD up for a bit of a tear jerker result].

Surely Clondaw Warrior wins this with Smullen giving the oustide up to no-one along the way?

Darn it; Blue Surf has gone now as well, but very happy with the draw for my remaining horses, Nearly Caught, Astronereus and Fun Mac, and am going to add Toe the Line. Would have backed Elishpour with a run as well.

Fun Mac seems to prefer going right handed, although he has won going left; other than that I think he has the beating of Clondaw warrior [famous last words!!!][oh, and the trainer says not to forget his other horse, Nearly Caught, who is one of my quartet, so I’m quite happy with that..just got to pick out horse number 4]

I have already backed Fun Mac and Arabian Comet and listening to Hughie’s comments today will probably also back Nearly Caught

I do think he’s a bit of a ‘forgotten horse’.

    Clondaw Warrior first reserve.

A few anxious moments for those who took ante-post prices. They will get their money back of course but a nice potential touch will have waved goodbye.

Battersea is out, he seems like one of those horses nothing will ever fall right for.

Happy enough with Astronereus at 16/1 and Fields Of Athenry at 14/1. Last years race saw the draws 16, 14, 19 and 22 come home 1-2-3-4, and my two are drawn 18 and 22 so that seems good news.

Baby O’Brien Donncha claims 5lb on Fields Of Athenry and has never ridden in the UK, far less at York. Hopefully it’s a very straight forward race in terms of tactics though.

Good luck to Clondaw Warrior fans and may the best horse win.

Maybe I’ll burst into song if Fields Of Athenry wins, prison ships and all!

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
