Fantastic little race with 3 of the best chasers around lining up. With a question mark over the ground I’d be tempted to side with Silviniaco Conti, who handles soft and has a great record in small fields. Dynaste was impressive at Cheltenham but it’s always difficult to follow up at Aintree, even though he ran away with the Mildmay last year. First Liuetenant is the fresh horse but may succumb to the staying power of SC. Menorah is classy butgetting on a bit now and would be a surprise winner, and the other two surely out of their depth.

I’m taking 6/5 First Lieutenant in a match bet vs Silvinaco Conti. SC is the overall better horse but conditions are in favour of FL here imo, has course form and with the drying ground and fresh legs in comparison with SC who had a hard race at Cheltenham and for me runs better with a bit of cut in the ground.

I think today’s conditions can bring out the best in Dynaste. He looked like he’d really appreciate a return to three miles when he won the Ryanair and he was ultra impressive when winning at this meeting last year.

I had thought I’d be backing First Lieutenant but he’s too short at around the 3/1 mark for my liking. He was a better price last year in what was probably a weaker race.

Silviniaco Conti was under the pump some way out in this race last year and he’s had another very hard race at Cheltenham. Like Nathan I’d fancy First Lieutenant to confirm the Aintree form from last year with him.

I think Dynaste is going to be hard to beat and feel he can win in impressive fashion.

I have never been a big fan of First Lieutenant and feel he doesn’t win as often as he probably should. For that reason I am concentrating on the other two.

Dynaste has run a couple of stinkers in his time and I am not convinced 3 miles plus is as good for him as the 2m 5f races where he has looked more impressive.

Silvianaco Conti was a lay for me in the Gold Cup but I want to be with him today. The form book shows he was held up last year and I expect him to be more aggressively ridden today. Those tactics helped him to harry Cue Card in the King George and in the Gold Cup he looked a likely winner before the hill took its toll. The trainer remains convinced he is a dour stayer but I’m not so sure.

I am pretty confident he can make this a test of the resolve that I am not sure the other two big names possess 100% of the time.

In the opener I am taking on Calipto again. Sometimes the bad luck angle is overplayed and he faces a few potentially dangerous banana skins today.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

    First Lieutenant

recorded just his third victory in eighteen career starts over fences in this race last year. He is an ultra-consistent horse, who has kept top class company throughout his career.

I think the combination of three miles-one on decent ground around a sharp track is ideal – he appears to get outstayed over three miles on testing ground, but done for toe over shorter.

Dynaste and Silviniaco Conti both had hard races at Cheltenham, while the latter was also beaten into third here last year. There is every chance that he would prefer softer conditions around a sharp track such as this.

A fine third at Haydock, won the King George, a creditable fourth at Cheltenham and now a brave effort to win the Bowl.

Silviniaco Conti is the champion staying chaser this season.

    Well done Steve.

And to think someone on here said they’d hate to own Silviniaco Conti a couple of years ago

Wasn’t it strange to see him jink again, though. Didn’t change the result but Dynaste didn’t jump the last as well as the winner; sort of brushed through the top of it.

Very true Rich, maybe the fact that I gave a successful fav to oppose as well tipped the scales in my favour

Also a missed opportunity for me today. I saw a locum Doctor recently, a right dried up old stick of a wifie, and noted she was named Doctor Harper. Made a note to look out for the horse of the same name and managed to miss the fact he was running today.

A good day for anyone called Peter with Guitar Pete and Parsnip Pete both going in at rewarding odds.

Cheers to all and hope you had a good bet on SC Rich.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Well done Rich and Steve, whose post was uncannily spot on.

I thought Dynaste ran an odd sort of race – not a classic ‘in snatches’, but on and off the bridle and never seemed in a rhythm. Still he looked the winner heading for the last, but found exactly nil after it – looked a classic non stayer to me.

Silv Conti might well dislike the Cheltenham hill and although he’s stamina-laden, flat tracks are looking like his fav venues

Thanks Joe, just proves that even a bust clock is occasionally correct.

I was against Silv at Cheltenham the past two years but am oddly tempted for next year at whopping odds of 14/1. He has age on his side and little mileage on the clock. It could be some of those in front of and behind him this year might fade into obscurity to some extent and some of the new kids on the block, such as the well supported Holywell and the stamina to answer Champagne Fever might not make the expected step up. If Tom Conti’s equine brother Silv comes to the last in front it wont necessarily be the case that three sweep past him on the run in. If he defends his King George title on Boxing Day the 14/1 will be a distant memory and it is a semi insulting price despite the hill factor, when the horse may just about be at the peak of his powers next season.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
