I see the Irish Tote has now signed a deal to link up its pools with Betfair. Since first seeing the Tote options on Betfair, I’ve wondered what Betfair get out of a deal, giving their customers directions to pit their wits agains perhaps less savvy Tote customers. Should Betfair and the Tote not be sworn enemies each competing for market share?
August 28, 2008 at 23:08 #178497Nope. Because they will get a commission on the deal, which is why most bookmakers have similar deals with the Tote. A competitive Tote market is good for the betting market full stop.

August 29, 2008 at 10:23 #178531The commission paid by the tote operators (about 8%) is more than the gross profit most bookmakers make from online business and a lot more than Betfair earn from their regular business.
August 29, 2008 at 16:28 #178567Not to mention the added bonus that with Tote Ireland they pay out four places on all 16+ runner plus races, handicaps or not.
