I see the Irish Tote has now signed a deal to link up its pools with Betfair. Since first seeing the Tote options on Betfair, I’ve wondered what Betfair get out of a deal, giving their customers directions to pit their wits agains perhaps less savvy Tote customers. Should Betfair and the Tote not be sworn enemies each competing for market share?

Nope. Because they will get a commission on the deal, which is why most bookmakers have similar deals with the Tote. A competitive Tote market is good for the betting market full stop.

    Betfair are making hay
    while the son shines

    The exotic bets
    sit like a lotto machine
in the cheap krone and baccy shop
    and although not fair
    they smell of fairness
as the pool deductions are standard
    and pre-set unlike overounds.

    Harrods offer businesses
    concessionary opportunities
    to broaden appeal.

Tesco wil soon be burying their customers

So Betfair are ganging up on the unlikely lads

Rather like sitting next to Branson
    when preferring a virgin flight
    five mile high brunette class
    with an optional slick bag,
Betfair the great big blue thing in jungle
    offers the goat.
After feeding it for a year or two
who knows it may want to own it.

    On the subject of hay
    I rue the day
    that daddy Black
    took up farming

Those were the lines along I was thinking, Gamble, but couldn’t possibly put it so eloquently or prophetically :D

The commission paid by the tote operators (about 8%) is more than the gross profit most bookmakers make from online business and a lot more than Betfair earn from their regular business.

Not to mention the added bonus that with Tote Ireland they pay out four places on all 16+ runner plus races, handicaps or not.
