Ah, the Tingle Creek – We don’t talk about that race.
Joking apart though, I actually thought Kalahari King was the one to beat yesterday. Having seen Twist Magic at close quarters in both the Tingle Creek and Desert Orchid Chase, I can’t help feeling that he’s a bit of a monkey – but a very talented monkey! He seemed on his toes a bit at Kempton, and although I heard a rumour in the parade ring that the reason he played up in these two races was that he doesn’t like racing in cold weather (a comment I don’t agree with as he won the 2007 Tingle Creek in bitterly cold conditions), he’s not a horse I could trust 100%. However, when he decides to co-operate, he really is useful (I still think he’d have given Master Minded something to think about in last years Tingle Creek if not falling 2 out), and although I was unable to see the race yesterday, I’ve been told that he absolutely hacked up. Yes, without doubt, a really talented horse and one of the best 2 milers about – when you catch him on a going day! Just that I felt Kalahari King was a bit more reliable.

Twist Magic what a little bugger he is. Top class today, behaved perfectly, travelled like a dream non stayer my a***.
Didn’t have a penny on him typically.
Kalahari King ran flat had enough for the season by the looks of it.
Oh come on Ian all his wins have come on very easy tracks. 100% he has stamina limitations like he has shown at Cheltenham, at Ascot and at Exeter when Ashley Brooke went off like scalded cat and didn’t stop.
PN is well aware ofthe horses limitations why else would Oumeyade who is a confirmed front runner make no effort to take up his customery role.
You would think the horse had won the QMCC instead of a race where his only danger ran flat as a pankake.
He may well be a very good horse when the ground is right and the course is right but as some are claiming on here he a far cry from the second best 2 miler around these days..
The truth of the matter is he has won one race this season he was laid out for which truned out to be a bit of a let down.

Can’t agree that Sandown is an easy course, though would certainly agree that Twist Magic has trouble staying 2 miles against top class opposition.
He has failed every single time he has tried.April 26, 2009 at 10:52 #223675AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
I alwasy thought it was very stiff until I went there. Got quite a surprise whan I saw it to be honest as it was much flatter than I imagined. Definitly can be a bit testing and lot horses do stop when they hit uphill run in.
I have heard it said if you can get your horse relaxed and jumping well you can get a good breather into him when jumping the 3 railway fences which are very close together. The simpliest things can make so much difference to the way a horse performs at certain courses. Perhaps getting that breather helps him get home and that is why Twist Magic always seems to run well there.
April 26, 2009 at 14:56 #223704Are Ferdy Murphys horses not running very well at the moment?

Ferdy’s always run well..when he wants them too
As it turns out Kalahari King hurt his back at the first fence and was hanging all the way round according to the SL’s website.
I can’t say I noticed that but he certainly had me worried from a long way out and 4 fences from home I had already given up the ghost.
April 26, 2009 at 18:02 #223731I’d given up on him as my Scoop 6 banker after 2 fences. More proof if any were needed that these top 2 milers take a lot out of themselves in giving top class performances like he did at Aintree. I suspect there’s a Nick Mordin style system in opposing any 2 miler that produces a top effort if they’re returned to the track within 4 weeks or so. As for Champion Chases- he’ll be 9 next year and is too old to improve past Master Minded.
April 26, 2009 at 19:32 #223742I think Mordin always bangs on about top 2 mile chasers can have two quick runs at the start of the season, and then after that 6 week gaps.

I was certainly not happy after the 2nd Carv but was kinda hoping he might get back into it. That apart I was reading today Ferdy is thinking about running him over further next season and possibly going for the King George. Mind you that’s a bit like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire with Kauto still around.
Maybe the Ryanair could be his best course of action. Not an easy horse to place and win with next year me thinks.
