Presumably, you have carried out some sort of a survey? A very disparaging throwaway comment in respect of many punters who may not bet massive amounts but could quite easily have every bit as much knowledge as those who might potentially flitter away 1000’s at a time just because they can afford to do so. As far as I am aware there are very few professional punters and I really don’t see why bookmakers in general should be falling over themselves to cater for such a small minority at the expense of the majority.

No I haven’t done a survey nor have any personal tales to tell as I ceased using off-course bookmakers fairly soon after the Exchanges appeared. I can only surmise from the numerous tales of others of which this from Eddie is but the latest in a long line

I wasn’t intending to be disparaging; on the contrary, £50 surely cannot be regarded as a "massive amount"’, particularly as I believe average stake across the industry is somewhere between £15 and £20. Hence me rattling on about the near-equivalence in real terms of me betting fivers, tenners and scores 35 years ago

And I’m certainly not of the view that to be a ‘serious’ punter you have to bet in tons and grands; a point I’ve actually made here on TRF in the past

5% net profit betting tenners is every bit as laudable as 5% betting hundreds; whatever you’re comfortable with, and intellectual satisfaction for its own sake at ‘beating the book’ a goal of equal merit to that of financial gain for its own sake

    You just need

    one

employee to take a scunner to you, and they can make it all go the way of the pear.

I read that, in effect, B365 don’t like taking bets from serious players, so I had a good relationship with them; lots of free bets, often good early prices, just nice to deal with.

Then I had a trixie come up paying 1000/1 to the individual stake (i.e. total stake divided by 4), and from then on, my Balance was never kept up to date. I needed to go into My Account to see what it really was. I had the distinct feeling, rather than the company, a single employee’s nose had been put out of joint, so I rang up and complained.

The girl really wasn’t interested, but tried to make semi-appropriate noises. I think she might have passed me to someone else, eventually. But I was told it was all done automatically, so … well… what? Nothing.

My tone was less than genial, so we’ve never really got back on the old footing. Just one churlish SOB, all it takes.

I bet they thought you were softening them up, Eddie. But it was a mean trick to pull fershaw. I suppose it’s always a balancing act for most of the big ones. Being as mean as they can get away with, without incurring too much bad PR. No worse than companies in other sectors. Maybe better than most, if not all multinationals (in other sectors).

The woman who, I believe runs B365, must be some business woman, and punters have her to thank for best of SP or early price. I think also the free bets. She stole a march on the others to begin with.

    Is that relevant Indocine,

Well yes, it’s entirely relevant, since they did not make the decision out of thin air.

However, if you don’t want to say and are content not to know why, then fine.

I’ve no interest Indocine in the 3 horses being analysed to see where I went wrong thanks, it’s pathetic.

13 & 15 runner sprint handicaps and a Group race all covered by C4 at high profile meetings.

Any bookmaker worth his salt should be taking bets for those sort of races till the cows come home, not go running scared like a baby after someone has bet a paltry 50 quid on a loser in each of them.

Just a shame horse racing has to rely on cowboys like these for an income.

Yes, I qualified for one £5 free bet, don’t know how the free bets work but presumably you have to have more than 3 bets to get any more.

I’ve not had a problem with Bet365, in fact I think they are by far the best online Bookie, for reasons that have been outlined earlier in this thread. I’ve been lucky enough to have taken them for almost £20k in the last twelve months, and they still lay me to lose a grand at early prices. I can only think that Eddie’s case has been a bit of a cock-up and it must be worth an email to them at least?

The real cowards amongst the bookmaking fraternity, in no particular order are:

Boylesports (refuse to take my bets but refuse to say why)
Victor Chandler (account closed but had the decency to write and tell me)
Ladbrokes (B.O.G, offers & free bets withdrawn, stakes limited to £15)
Stan James (offer SP bets only, for small stakes)
Paddy Power (early price liability limited to under £100)
Skybet (stakes up to max £20 at early prices)

Finally Betfred, who I thought were ok, today offered one of ‘Fred’s boosts’ on a Afsare/Songcraft double at 7/1, which I though was decent value. Prices at time of placing the bet were 13/8 and 6/4 respectively. Afsare refused to go in the stalls, while Songcraft won. Betfred however, rather than pay out on the win single at the price that was available and the time the bet was placed, paid out on a win single on Songcraft at SP (11/10). So by taking the ‘boosted’ double price, I have actually ended up losing money. I tried to have word with them about it but that was ten minutes of my life wasted.

Sky are a joke. They gave me a £5 free bet, and in time I won £53, but eventually gave back 34 – which loss was just about the equivalent of the return on the free bet plus my 5. But after my initial win on Albaqaa, I couldn’t get the videos of future races, nor put a forecast on!
