Letthebighossroll;
Kinane is a very good jockey. I dont think you really know what you are talking about.
The only ride you could have a go at him for was on Giants Causeway because he dropped a rein, but I dont think he would have beat the monster that was Tiznow. Everyone makes mistakes, even in the big races: Frankie on Swain in the BCC a few years back, Victor Esp on Officer in the BC juve in 2001 etc.
The problem with using the Breeders Cup to judge our jocks is the fact that they are at a disadvantage from the start because they are new to the style of racing but more importantly is the fact that they are riding horses that aren’t prepared for the job; If you watch the runnig of this years BC juve which vindication won you will see that it’s the three European horses that break very slowly, Tommahawk, Hold That Tiger and Van Nist. It must be the jockeys I hear you say, Fallon and Kinane etc but the jock on Van Nist was Jonny Velazquez one of the top jockeys over there.
The problem is that our horses aren’t trained to go quick from the start and so are at a disadvantage with the quick starting americans.
So using the BC as an example of M Kinane’s shortcomings isn’t really a good idea, and his european record speaks for itself, I doubt the coolmore folks would keep him if he wasn’t any good.
johnjdonoghue; well said.
February 27, 2003 at 10:14 #102571What are you talking about, [removed by admin] ???
When did I say that the ‘Euro starts’ that a lot of our (more specifically O’Brien’s) horses got was the fault of the jockeys. That’s right, I didn’t.
I am commenting on three atrocious rides that Kinane has given in the biggest races in the world in the last three years.
You can name other jockeys to have given bad rides…but those names (unless it’s Earlie Fires) don’t repeat themselves three years in a row, do they?
February 27, 2003 at 12:30 #102572Funny, that, Flagglesbury. I felt sure he played in the French side that won the World Cup. And the name "Celestine" couldn’t sound more French. But, there you are. I’m still probably a little bit better at geography than GWB, if not much better at putting places to faces.
February 27, 2003 at 22:41 #102573Hi Guy’s
Iam what is called a golden oldie and I respect allyour viewsabout the jockey’s mentioned in this thread I would like to put forward my views ofthe jockey’S my life so far and please look up their ridind records. so here goes
Gordon Richards Doug Smith Eph Smith Scobie Breasley
Bill Williamson toname just a few.
We all have our idea of great jockey’s but different era’s
have different cicumstances and I would say that it would be very difficult to say which era produced the best jockey

Your arrogance and aggression are quite tedious. I understand that you are entitled to your opinion like the rest of us, but to put your views across in the way you do is very offensive. I doubt you ever sat on a horse in your life, let alone participated in any form of race.
There is nothing wrong with being objective in your criticism, but to be so arrogant as to be abusive in your opinion of a jockey who won a stack load of group ones in the last three seasons is ridiculous as it is offensive. Just because you read the racing post does not make you an expert, go ride a decade of seasons on the flat, and then at least I could take you seriously.
People like you are not in horse racing for the love of the sport, I would say you’re possibly in it for your own profit. I mean how could be, when you castigate people who have dedicated their lives to racing. I see people like you in the local bookies every week, shouting abuse at jockeys, because they have not given the horse a decent ride in their opinion. Only their opinion counts for nothing, as they have not got a clue what they are talking about, mainly because they have never been in that situation. Which I would definitely attribute to you, be careful you don’t sink into your saddle when your watching racing, your saddle being your armchair of course. As an ex Leeds manager used to say….
At the end of the day you’re only an armchair fan.
P.S. Any expletives you use to reply, thats if you do choose to reply, will be taken on the chin.
Your best mate,
John J.
I respect your opinion (I really do); I hunt most weeks, so I do at least have experience of what it takes to ride, albeit not in a race.
So I have been somewhat churlish in putting forward my views, I nevertheless stick by them. First and foremost I am not disparaging Kinane’s notable career in the saddle. I respect his talent and his achievements. However, I will continue to argue that he has lost a degree of his adeptness; and, in a game where the margins between defeat and victory are so fine I certainly wouldn’t consider him a top flight jockey when compared to Dettori, Bailey or Valenzeula.
Furthermore, let me tell you that I am in horse racing purely for the love of the sport.

Your reply is a breath of fresh air, I’m pleased that you are more respective of MJK. And I do respect your opinion now, so we’ll call a ceasefire!
All the best with the hunting.
JohnJ.
