I know we all moan about British bookmakers but to follow up Yeats thread on ownership based in the UK is there a better country to bet in than the UK (general terms not just on horse racing)?
We have so many options and such a wide array of bets that can only be dreamed about by others in PMU monopoly countries.

I notice this forum is now sponsored by a bookie. Do you work for them?

Australia is somewhat Tote dominated but also offers Betfair, Corporate and on course bookmaker services. Illegal SP operators have always done good business for those with access. Bookmaker and Tote operators offer a fairly broad range of fixed odds markets across a number of different sports. Betfair trade on local markets isn’t what it should/could be Downunder and in running volumes are particularly weak.
The Tote operators have been known to offer a number of incentives ( kick backs ) to large punters. Bookmaking firms offer a number of incentives to losers. Stories of big losers associated with corporate embezzlement are not uncommon.

Australia may not be better but it sure isn’t worse. You’ll still have problems getting set if you’re a winner. At least their racing is funded a bit better when well managed.
July 5, 2010 at 12:05 #304773The guy that invented pari-mutuel betting also brought the world the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergere. Hey, two out of three aint bad.
July 5, 2010 at 13:29 #304783First race at Newton Abbot, fav unmoved at 10/11 despite the second and third favs dropping considerably in price and 2/1 being available on Betfair.
Think we could manage with bookmakers here somehow.July 5, 2010 at 13:33 #304785In France they’d be betting 5/6, 2/1, 11/4 Eddie with no option to take the bigger prices on Betfair.
Yes Zorro I work for a bookmaker and no I’m not one – I’d much prefer it if everyone played with a straight bat from the bookmakers, to the owners, trainers, jockeys and the BHA but I doubt that will happen.
As it is I’m more than happy being able to place a double or a treble on any three races at any three meetings rather than the "pick 3" or "pick 4" that is in place at US tracks.
I’d love to see a Superfecta-esque bet in all British handicaps with 13 or more runners but I doubt the Tote would go for something like that and in the ideal world British racing would be more like that of the Hong Kong model in terms of liquidity. Alas various parties have seen to that that will never happen.

If I lived in France and most other countries I would not be interested in betting. Horse racing yes, not betting.Value Is EverythingJuly 5, 2010 at 16:01 #304814
