I doubt many of our UK members will be following the events of the Mahon Tribunal, set up to investigate whether our then Taioseach Bertie Ahern was given illegal payments by a developer, but today’s developments may be of some interest.
Much of the Tribunal’s focus lately has been on lodgements Mr Ahern made to his bank account in sterling, when he had no visible sterling income. In attempting to explain this today he said that the sterling lodgements could be partly accounted for as money he "won on the horses".
As the man was previously thought to be a tenner each-way punter this has caused some hilarity, but he’d surely only be following in the tradition of such political heavyweights as Charlie Mc Creevy and Ivan Yates. What I want to know is- are you on here Bertie, and what do you fancy for the Derby?June 5, 2008 at 07:14 #166482Not to mention the fact that he was allegedly getting loans from business friends etc because he was out of pocket at the time and then he tries to tell the court that even though he was down on his luck, he was still able to punt enough to generate that sort of winnings.
It’s great to know that after 10+ years as Taoiseach, his legacy will be that he swindled the country, just like his mentor Haughey
"NO" vote here I come!
June 5, 2008 at 08:18 #166493Readers of Private Eye magazine will remember Charlie Haughey as "the boozy bookie" which was quite apt given his florid appearance and expertise at ‘creative accounting’ and ‘earnings management’
will the circle be unbroken?

Not sure you can compare him to Haughey David Brady. I certainly don’t think he is in that league. He may not be squeaky clean, but the country has prospered under his leadership over the last ten years.
Firefox,
You do live up to your name, one has to say….

Bit of an exaggeration I agree although I disagree that the country has prospered, other than financially, as such. We may all be earning fortunes compared to our parents but quality of living is hardly great with crime, transport, health, housing etc all in a shambles.
June 5, 2008 at 12:52 #166556David,
I do remember the eighties, I am from Dublin, its better than it was..substancially.

June 6, 2008 at 16:05 #166875Bertie did his fair share of good work during his tenure no doubt, but this is becoming embarrasing.
I really don’t think there is that much of an interest within the general public to know the in’s and out’s of the whole affair now. The Mahon Tribunal has been a massive waste of taxpayer money.
