I was thinking about the situation last night. The only stewarding decision I can recall that was comparably bad is the disqualification of Royal Gait in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in the late 1980s.

Or Cahervillahow being disqualified in the 1991 Whitbread.
June 9, 2026 at 15:31 #1768536Whilst I respect the view Jason Tan on the Nick Luck Daily today, his argument did seem to me nonsensical. It was akin to saying you could have VAR at one end of the pitch but not the other if cameras were only in some of the stalls.
My own view is that much of the over-regulated Oceanic influence in the administration of UK racing hasn’t been to the benefit of the sport over here at all.

I agree, although (after timing 35 years after the event) I didn’t mind at the time because I backed Docklands Express.
June 9, 2026 at 16:31 #1768540It’s hard to believe but the whole thing is getting even sillier.
June 9, 2026 at 16:49 #1768545Would be interesting to hear the absolute nonsense these clowns would produce if they were sat at a table together.
Never has the saying “the blind leading the blind” been more apt outside of politics. The more I know the less I understand.
June 11, 2026 at 17:32 #1768618Wrist Art deemed a runner here:
So a horse that completes the race but was slightly disadvantaged by having one hoof off the ground at the start is a non-runner, but one that rears up and doesn’t even exit the stalls is a runner? Even applying basic maths it doesn’t make sense: Benvenuto Cellini – one hoof off the ground; Wrist Art – two hooves off the ground.
What a complete mess.
June 11, 2026 at 17:45 #1768619Blimey that could have been really nasty and yet deemed a runner!
The more I know the less I understand.
June 11, 2026 at 19:05 #1768626Are these non-runner decisions being made by some faceless individual at Stockley Park?
Once all the horses are in the stalls there shouldn’t be any non-runners.
At least today’s incident could be argued that the horse was a non-runner as he didn’t leave the stalls and nor did the jockey.
The BHA have really opened a Pandora’s Box on this issue.
June 11, 2026 at 19:48 #1768629If the stalls are faulty or there is some unexpected external event (e.g. something blocking the horse from leaving the stall) which prevents a fair start, horse is a non-runner. Otherwise, it ran and lost.
June 11, 2026 at 19:58 #1768631You’re quite right Tonge. I should have added that. I still wonder whether Friendly Soul putting her foot in a hole should have been deemed a non-runner after the race. Could that be classed as an exceptional circumstance beyond the control of both horse & rider even though it’s part way through a race? But to keep things simple just go back to how it was before the BHA came out with this new policy.
June 11, 2026 at 20:10 #1768632I too agree but that incident at Yarmouth I think people could understand a non runner situation in comparison to Benvenuto Cellini.
The more I know the less I understand.
June 11, 2026 at 22:23 #1768670After hearing the evidence and viewing the start the stewards deemed Wrist Art a runner

The more I know the less I understand.
