Considering the ease of her victory over the colts in the Irish Derby I would say Salsabil would have had very strong claims in the Derby itself. She’s as good a middle distance filly as I have seen.
I agree that both Balanchine & Ouija Board would have had strong chances as well.
June 10, 2007 at 21:51 #64345I’d be pretty confident that had Petite Etoile run in the Derby rather than the Oaks, she’d have seen off Parthia back in 1959.
Parthia was a high class colt, but rather one-paced and the filly would have done him for toe.
June 10, 2007 at 21:54 #64346And it appears that Rags to Riches will stay in training in 2008-it was beginning to look like there would be no of the top 3 year olds left as both Street Sense and Hard Spun are being retired after the Breeders’ Cup.
Bring on the Alabama Stakes…
June 10, 2007 at 23:43 #64347Is Michael Tabor the only big time owner not interested in the commercial side of flat racing? He buys horses to race.He and Smith are a wonderful addition to the owner side of racing.
June 10, 2007 at 23:52 #64348What about User Friendly?
After Epsom she won the Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks, St Leger and was just beaten in the Arc with Dr Devious and St Jovite behind.
June 12, 2007 at 09:38 #64349Given the crabbing the 2006 Derby form, and Sir Percy in particular, has been given, I’m surprised no one has put forward Alexandrova as a filly that could have won the Derby
June 12, 2007 at 10:37 #64350Alot of nice flillies here but surely very few would have come close to that wonderful racemare, and twice horse of the year, Dahlia. As a 3yo she won the Irish Oaks, King George and Washington DC International.
Her big race wins were :-
Irish Guinness Oaks 1973
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes 1973
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes 1974
Benson & Hedges Gold Cup 1974
Benson & Hedges Gold Cup 1975
Grand Prix de St. Cloud 1974
Prix Saint-Alary 1973
Man O’War Stakes 1974
Canadian International Championship 1974
Washington D.C. International 1973
Record speaks for itself.
