Watching SSR, I rather like the name given to the meetings that have been transferred from Belmont Park to Aqueduct. It makes “Royal Ascot at York” all those years ago sound a bit boring in comparison.
September 29, 2022 at 19:44 #1616315You mean “Rascot at the Big Y” surely?

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 29, 2022 at 21:34 #1616331Some people on twitter did jokingly suggest naming the meet Royal Aqueduct.
But NYRA is calling it the “Big A” rather than the actual track name because they don’t like admitting that Aqueduct still exists. It’s rougher around the edges, runs more lower-level races and the facilities haven’t been kept up to the level of Saratoga and Belmont. They’re renovating Belmont with the intention of getting rid of AQU entirely. Land in New York City proper is just too valuable to be used for a racetrack.
September 30, 2022 at 18:22 #1616424Couple of really good races at “the Big A” tomorrow night.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 1, 2022 at 11:25 #1616524The Woodward (G1) over 9F appears like a jog in a park for Life is Good who’s four runner opposition wouldn’t even make an alternate list in the heydays of this historic race. But, I take nothing for granted in a horse race. I wish that he wins, and wins well, thus enticing his connections to go for the BC Classic as opposed to opting for the Dirt Mile where many believe he will end up. Conversely, there are those that think his poor showing in the 10F Dubai World Cup was an aberration and not indicative of his true ability. I’m hopeful that is the case so we can see him against Flightline…
But I’m more interested in the 2-yo race, Champagne Stakes (G1) over 8F. It looks a very competitive renewal, and I’ll be looking to see how Verifying, a colt by Justify, does here. He only has had one start, a maiden win in August at Saratoga but it was a very good performance, visually…
October 1, 2022 at 11:41 #1616529Life Is Good is an exciting miler who just about stays 1m1f – always love to see him run.
The 2yo race is fascinating for the future.
Meanwhile, at Santa Anita, Country Grammar is in action – it will be interesting to see how he gets on after being annihilated by Flightline, a performance the Racing Post decided must have been a stone and a half below his previous form.
I’m not sure it was.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 1, 2022 at 12:34 #1616556I attended the Woodward Stakes way back in 1999 on my one and only trip to New York.
I had an agenda planned in my head. This changed when I picked up a leaflet for Belmont Park in the hotel lobby and I saw there was a meeting there the next day, which was too good an opportunity to miss.
Just $2 entry fee for a 10 race card including 2 Grade 1s. Plus a journey on a huge American train out of Penn Station through Queens and into the track’s own station. Can’t beat that for value!
October 1, 2022 at 12:38 #1616559How could Racing Post make such an assessment? Based on what?
Country Grammar was timed in 2:02 minutes for his performance in the 10F Pacific Classic, which was about 2 seconds faster than in the 10F Dubai World Cup. I appreciate the difference of surfaces, but 2 seconds represents about 12-15 lengths at standard conditions.
Moreover, for reference, on the day of the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, about a couple of hours earlier at Saratoga, Olympiad’s winning time in the 10F Jockey Club Gold Cup was about 2:02 minutes which is on par for these horses over the distance…
In my view, Country Grammar progressed, not regressed…

Based on running scared from giving Flightline a rating that was completely off the scale, I’d imagine.

October 1, 2022 at 18:35 #1616653It looks a bit wet at the Big A. All the turf races have been switched to the dirt.
October 1, 2022 at 19:00 #1616655CAS loves “The Big A” so much he’s made it rain so they have to race on turf.

Meanwhile, at Santa Anita, Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammar couldn’t peg back stablemate Defunded on his first outing since being pulverised by Flightline in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 2, 2022 at 07:49 #1616698I’ve just had a good look at Country Grammar’s recent runs, where he’s finished in relation to other horses etc.
I don’t agree with the RPR that he was 21lb below par in the Pacific Classic but his run last night suggested to me he’s run to about 115, below his Dubai World Cup form.
If Country Grammar ran to the same 115 against Flightline you’d have to rate Flightline 148+ which is astronomical, but Country Grammar’s had horse with ORs of 115 and 116 seven lengths behind him in fourth that day, so in that context it’s not that implausible a number.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 2, 2022 at 10:30 #1616735In yesterday’s race at Churchill Downs, Country Grammar had taken over the lead and looked poised to win with less than a furlong to go but, unfortunately, the saddle slipped and his jockey had to lean hard to his left against the eventual winner just to maintain his balance. He lost by inches, however if he had won I’m sure his number would have been lowered by the judges…
September 28, 2023 at 18:43 #1664686I notice Belmont at the Big A is back on Sky Sports Racing.
I still think it is a great name.
