Has anyone got one?
I’m thinking of growing one – not for any particular reason other than as a temporary distraction from the absurdity of it all. However how long do they stay itchy for?
February 14, 2009 at 03:32 #210066In my younger days I used to grow one every winter – my official reason being it kept me warm in the cold months.
The real reason being I did (and still do) detest shaving, especially on cold winter mornings.
The itching only lasts a few days. It is a bit odd sleeping on it for the first week or so when it is stubbly, but once it softens it is OK.
Biggest problem can come from "significant others", again especially during the early stages when it is stubbly.
I wouldn’t even contemplate growing one now a) because I have nothing on top to balance it out and b) my stubble has so much grey it looks really bad.
February 14, 2009 at 03:46 #210070my ex used to grow a beard every winter because he rode a motor bike and he reckoned it kept his face warm; he used to say the good thing was when he shaved it off in the spring he looked 10 years younger..then, one spring he shaved it off and he didn’t looked young any more so he never grew one again [this sounds like a fairy tale that should have some sort of happy ending or moral attached to it..it doesn’t; sorry].
February 14, 2009 at 04:27 #210074I sport a rather discreet moustache but have never grown a full beard.
Running a sharp blade through well-lathered three-day stubble is one of life’s little pleasures
February 15, 2009 at 22:22 #210419Pete .. if you do grow a beard make it a full Gandalf and not one of those wanky little goatie-n-a-tash type efforts those don’t wannabe middle age types sport.
Never had one myself, I look too scruffy anyway.
February 16, 2009 at 00:06 #210438Pete don’t you think your taking the credit crunch a bit far, last week it was the T.V licence getting chucked and now your trying to cut back on shaving foam have Portsmouth put up the price’s of next season’s season tickets or something?

February 17, 2009 at 00:48 #210612An ex of mine has one, take it from me its best not trim a beard before kissing your dearest as is can be rather painful…
Some men look sexy with them, some not.
A collgoue of mine looks like the Opera singer John Tomlinson too the point I spent part of the winter calling him votan as i half expected him too start singing in German and putting his daughters in a ring of fire up the nearest hill…..March 1, 2009 at 17:31 #212900I grew one for charity a couple of months ago. I have always liked to be clean shaven so it was a challege and for the first week I hated it. After that I got some compliments so I kept it til last week! My wife wasn’t so keen on the kissing bit ( I raised £200 for breast cancer charity too)
March 2, 2009 at 04:53 #213000I’ve had a moustache for about 15 years now, but decided to grow a goatee and a mullet for the ‘full effect’ when I was over in Germany, so that I could ‘blend in’ with the locals. When I returned to the UK (by now, also wearing some ‘bling’ in the shape of a gold necklace), my British friends seemed to think that either I had becomes Britains number 1 adult movie export, the third Hairy Biker, or Professor Denzil Dexter from the Fast Show. Unfortunately, due to my portly frame, one of my mates thought I’d been on Stars in your Eyes as Demis Roussos. The beard, bling and mullet soon disappeared, although I’ve still got the ‘tache!

December 23, 2009 at 19:18 #265178I’ve had a beard for about two months now. Used to shave them off after about a month because that was when I found them itchy. For some reason haven’t found it itchy this time. Maybe my senses are becoming numbed over the years. I just wanted to see how much grey there was in it.
Gave as a reason that I wanted to look older, and have gravitas, and be taken seriously. I am one of the unfortunates who for the past twenty years have looked about 10 years younger than I actually am.
Was supposedly going to shave my beard off at the start of the new year, but I can’t face having to shave at 5 o’clock every morning.

I think your acting the goat
December 23, 2009 at 20:41 #265190I regularly get to the point of nearly having a beard, I call it ‘the rough and ready look’ the missus hates it though so I’ve never been able to carry it through to a full grown beard.
Like others, the sole reason is my complete dislike of shaving and the irritation it so often brings.
If Santa has been listening to what I want and fetches me the Clinique stuff I’ve heard so many good things about, then I’ll be able to please the missus and keep clean shaven most of the time and look like I’m in my mid twenties again…
