This is a bugbear of mine.

Why also was a 2m novices handicap chase named after Red Rum instead of the longest handicap chase at Aintree in April outside the GN itself?

Why isn’t the Classic Trial at Sandown Park named after Shergar instead of that nonsense coming up this Saturday?

I do not recall Arkle winning many races over two miles. It would make more sense for the 3 mile novice chase to be named after him.

I agree that Dayjur was more consistent and possibly a smidgen better in ability too. But – at their bests – it would’ve been very close between them and imo Battaash deserves to be rated as a “great sprinter”. Because although didn’t always show it he was capable of great sprinting performances. Consistency (before injury) was better than some give him credit for too – just needed the right conditions.

“we live in an era when any horse with an OR of 120 plus is dubbed a “superstar”….”

    How true.

I was reading an old Timeform annual last night (Racehorses of 1978) and Henry Cecil’s promising 2yo R.B. Chesne, rated 123, is described as being “some way below classic-winning standard.”

I wonder just how many classics Coolmore have plundered over the years with horses who barely reached a rating of 123?

    How times have changed.

I would think the way / people doing the ratings have changed, rather than the times Gladiatuer. Seems to make zero sense, and smacks of an overly nostalgiac view, to suggest that horses were better in the 70’s than they are now.

The way two year olds are trained has changed.

    And

There’s more information for form analysts to study in order to evaluate form. ie Ratings are in all probability more accurate nowadays.

Shame he had to be unsexed to realise his full potential and therefore misses out on the stallion scene.

Modern training methods don’t want horses “better,” just fitter.

Though he raced before I was born I am happy to accept Abernant as the all-time greatest sprinter.

In my lifetime – and definitely at 5f – it’s Dayjur.

Battaash was very good, best at 5f for years on his day.

    But Dayjur was great.

No doubt Battaash was a terrific sprinter on his day but I think Dayjur was a marginally better speedster overall.

The one sprinter I did love was Overdose aka the Budapest Bullet. One frightfully fast horse.

Overdose was fantastic :-) Another sprinter I was a big fan of was Lochsong.

If we are talking about recent sprinting “greats”, I think Black Caviar deserves a mention.
