Very meh look about the cards today.

It would have been nice to have had the Newbury card today with the Challow and the Mandarin although that old chase has been seriously dumbed down since the good old days.

May not have got the crowd of last week though I suppose.

I went out for a long walk in the countryside and en route I called in at a pub and had a nice lunch and two good pints of beer.

I never thought to watch any racing. Did I miss anything? ;-)

Ah, the Mandarin, now a former shadow of it’s former self. Then there is the old 4m ASW Chase on New Years Days – that’s gone. And the Mildmay/Cazalet – also gone.

Was looking back on the Racing Post website, and the New Years Eve/ Day meeting is rather different to how it was; I think it was mentioned that since the extra day at ‘The Festival’ it’s become a one day meeting, and races have been dropped/replaced.

And don’t forget Windsor’s New Years Day Hurdle.

    Plenty of valid points.

It’s always a problem when you get New Year’s Day on a weekend. The other option would have been to have had a quiet or blank Saturday and run the New Year fixtures on the Bank Holiday.

When you get a month with five Saturdays that can present problems as the normal pattern is for four Saturdays. That either means diluting one or two of the other Saturdays by moving fixtures or creating a one-off schedule for this spare Saturday.

Having New Year’s Day on a Saturday solves the problem as the New Year meetings fill the gap but the Bank Holiday suffers as it has no fixtures left. We had the curious position of Musselburgh racing Saturday and Monday.

On the topic of crap racing, can anyone remember a more underwhelming Friday than today? 🤔

How can you possibly say that on “Chatteris Fen Day?”

The racing has been moderate all week, to put it kindly – but that was inevitable after all the quality racing over the festive season.

It looks quite good tomorrow. One of my favourite Saturdays of the jumps season, in fact. I always enjoy the Warwick meeting. RTV showed some of the previous renewals of the Classic Chase, including some from the days when it was the Brooke Bond Warwick National!
