Kicks off on the 19th Jan and should be a great opportunity for Murray to notch his first of…a few more grand slam titles!
Murray’s the 2/1 fav and seeded 4! He’s been drawn in the same half as Rafa. At least he wont play him in the final! Federer is 5/2. Could meet Fed in the final….easy then.
If you’d told me ten years ago a scottish bloke…..yeah, you know the rest.
Some fancy prices on BF, notably Roddick 140-1! (could be carrying an injury)
I wouldn’t go anywhere near him personally but it’s still a bit larger than the rest who generally go 40’s.
I’m taking the No.1 seed Nadal at 7/2 to improve for his recent outing and over the longer trip of best of five sets….stamina undoubted!
Should be a cracking tournament either way and would be a thrill to see Murray win it.
Who do you fancy?….apart from most of the women!

Who do the women fancy? If it’s the volley of a fellow female, then elaborate please…

Bring it on!
January 16, 2009 at 18:07 #204357Interesting to read Andy Murray’s brother Jamie’s comments on the Australian Open. He said that although his brother is the form player at present, he nevertheless thinks that Roger Federer will take all the beating.
I think 5/4 about Federer reaching the final would be my bet.

January 16, 2009 at 18:54 #204375Andy Murray does not look good value to me and I think he may have stamina problems in the conditions if he gets involved in too many long matches early on in the tournament. I reckon it’s between Federer and Nadal and I expect Roger Federer to beat Nadal in the final.
In the women’s tournament, I have a strong fancy for Ana Ivanovic but that has got nothing to do with tennis
Serena Williams is in good form and has a good record at this event. I always worry about her fitness though and at the odds of 10/1 then I would bet on the Russian Dinara Safina if I bet on tennis which I don’t.So those are my two picks for everybody to ignore.
Good luck and I will watch the event as much as I can.

Other than Tsonga, I think Nadal is the only real competition in Murray’s half of the draw. Federer on the other hand has Djokovic, Nalbandian, Soderling (who has beaten him recently I believe), the thoroughly likeable Baghdatis and the undeniably gifted Safin to contend with.
I wouldn’t be keen to bet that Federer made the final.
Andy Murray’s improved fitness has given his game an extra dimension, and few players are equipped to deal with him. In previous years he was almost guaranteed to wither if taken into a fourth or fifth set, but stamina and determination (there was also a time when he would capitulate if behind) reduce that risk.
I think I’ll take small chances on Safin @ 150/1, Tsonga @ 20/1 and Nadal @ 7/2 (I would select Murray from those at the head of the market, but with slight concerns about his back it’s not worth chancing).
January 16, 2009 at 21:20 #204418Watching a bit of the warm-up Sydney tournament this morning, Murray’s definitely got the heat to contend with. It looks horrific. Really bad. A few evening games, a bit a cloud cover or rain wouldn’t go amiss….
January 17, 2009 at 21:01 #204720I think 5/4 about Federer reaching the final would be my bet.
He looked imperious this morning when winning his warm up tournament.
The 5/4, if still available, looks a gift.
Djokovic looked out of sorts when losing to Nieminen the other morning and only Nalbandian, who subsequently beat Nieminen in the NZ final, represents any sort of threat in Federers half of the draw IMO.
January 19, 2009 at 02:44 #205041Good Luck to Andy
In the Womens a Brit outsider who is playing well and could win her opening match in the early hours of monday is Anne Keothavong against the seeded Chakvetadze @ 2.75 [Skybet]..Stake,£5

Won 2nd set set,but pretty awful in the other two
January 19, 2009 at 23:58 #205213Hi All
I think Federer is very poor value at 5/2 The fact is apart from anything else he just can’t beat Nadal and much the same is beginning to apply when playing Murray. I also feel that although Murray has an undoubted chance 2/1 is a silly price for a grand slam.Tsonga at 20/1 looks some sort of value and probably Nadal at 7/2January 20, 2009 at 00:24 #205221It is true that both Federer and Nadal’s form has dropped recently, but like all class sportsmen ( and women ), they tend to re-gain that form when the big events come along.
Make no bones about it, this is a big test for Murray. Has he improved enough to win his first grand slam ? We shall find out soon.
I think he’s up against it.

Apparently, the service order went to pot in the last set with neither the umpire or the players noticing!
Keothavong said it made no difference to the outcome.
I’d be up in arms ffs, demanding a one set play off!
How wonderfully British of her

In contrast, during the Murray ‘win’, the ball boys and girls got a rollicking from the umpire for a somewhat less than fleet-footed ball change. "Come on, move it!" being his choice of words I believe.

WTF’s going on down there?!
January 20, 2009 at 21:38 #205401FWIW at this stage, Nadal has looked the most impressive.
The demolition of his 1st round opponent was as one sided as you’ll ever see in mens tennis. Every department of his game looked as good as I’ve seen it, resulting in me splashing on £50 @ 4/1 (bet365)…which is half a point better than before kick off!!!

I just can’t see him losing to anyone right now.
January 23, 2009 at 22:31 #206099Looking impressive in the early rounds is not significant what is needed is a gradual build up with the view of hitting form in the later rounds to peak in the final. Just like horse racing really peaking at the right time for the big prizes
January 26, 2009 at 16:21 #206589As I suggested earlier, Andy Murray was up against it.
He’s out !

Murray….."I’m not going to say I was still suffering from the illness because everyone will say I’m making excuses….."
Voila!!

My 4-1 on Nadal looks a bit better too…. Vamos Rafa!!
January 27, 2009 at 01:06 #206666I see the Scottish tennis player has lost again.
January 27, 2009 at 02:18 #206679In fairness, he did look really pasty for someone that’s been in a hot climate for the past month or so.
He lacked that bulldog spirit too
