…from The Australian’s general sports columnist , Patrick Smith:

David Willmot runs Canada’s famous Woodbine racecourse. He has watched his business lose ground at a frightening rate to competitors, both legal and illegal. It has been a sophisticated campaign waged by racing’s enemies.
At Woodbine, agents for betting exchanges and illegal bookmakers had agents amongst the punters wooing them to the better returns the opposition offered.
The depth of Willmot’s problem became evident in a discussion with several heavy punters.
By the end he put it to one of the punters that his betting on a soulless internet exchange – which was not putting money back into racing – would eventually see the death of the thoroughbred business.
"You’ll be betting on frogs," Willmot offered. The punter replied: "Then I’ll find the fastest frog."
Nothing illustrates racing’s problem better. Some studies show as much as 95 per cent of thoroughbred betting is done by pure punters, five per cent by traditional horse lovers.
And punters will bet where they get the best service and the best return on the dollar………..consistently racing has failed to deliver on both service and return.

<br>Since illegal betting agencies relied on Singapore’s betting and odds for their websites, a clever plan was hatched.
Singapore officials would monitor illegal sites, note what horses had been backed in heavily, then just before the horses jumped the club would withdraw their takeout percentage of the bet which would blow the dividend.
The big payouts busted several illegal agencies almost overnight………

The conference also endured a haranguing from Pat Williams, senior vice-president of Orlando Magic in the NBA and a man chased for his motivational speeches. His final point was that quality can only come from team work. He told of his loyal gardener who risked his life to kill a mass of highly poisonous water moccasin snakes on his property in the US.
Asked by Williams why he didn’t fear the snakes would make a mad run in all directions and perhaps charge him, the gardener replied that water moccasins think like a team and would never leave each other if they thought one was in trouble.
So there you go. Stick together like a team and you get a spade whacked across the back of your head. Williams left the room to limp applause. And very much on his own.
