Just like to say I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the various opinions regarding the racing at Ascot (and indeed for the flat season so far). Perhaps it’s something to do with the sun shining but the contrast with the pre-Cheltenham discussion is marked. No toys thrown out of pram, no ‘my bets are bigger than your bets’ and comparison of the merits of the main contenders not reduced to the depressing "Denman will win" "’No he won’t" "Yes he will" level of February and early March (and most of the winter for that matter). Good to see the forum returning to its civilised, informative best.
June 16, 2008 at 22:02 #168619Oh no it isn’t.
June 16, 2008 at 22:10 #168622It’s as I always suspected, Flat racing fans are more cleverer than jumps racing fans.
June 16, 2008 at 22:25 #168628Henry will win – FACT!
June 16, 2008 at 22:32 #168630I agree Henry will win.

June 17, 2008 at 00:09 #168645You see that horse. That horse running around loose without a jockey. That horse that appears to not know how to run fast.
That’s your horse that is.

June 17, 2008 at 09:02 #168672While playing Devil’s Advocate – it could be argued that the Racing at Ascot is ‘less interesting’ than at Cheltenham – and with no Denman v Kauto Star clash to promote.
June 17, 2008 at 10:10 #168691Less interesting (full stop)

Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 17, 2008 at 18:49 #168866Oh dear.
I confess now, before you all, that I had determined to allow the 2008 Flat season to pass by without any comment whatsoever from yours truly, as to slate it for it’s inherent shiteness would be like shooting fish and a barrel, as well as stating the bleeding obvious. I also concede that my annual advocacy of decency, class and spectacle, does tend to grate with followers of the level, and I was happy to give them the year off.
However, I cannot let Andrew’s post go by without commenting on it’s blatant revisionism, and all round Flat-slapping wankyness.
It is nought but Flatulent Tendency propaganda, and I for one shall not let the good name of this here racing forum be tainted by such misleading verbal chuggery and legerdemain.
That is all.
Edit: I trust this does not drag down the "tone" of this "debate".
June 17, 2008 at 20:09 #168886Not at all brother Grasshopper. It was interesting, thoughtful and dare i say inspired stuff

This is the danger of summer hibernation. If aroused from their slumber, the National Hunt fanatic can become disorientated and angry, babbling incoherently. Unable to understand why the horses on the television are moving so quickly, they can experience dizziness and in some cases Tourettes-like outbursts of vernacular abuse.
The only cure is to catch them humanely (by luring them into steel cages with a mouldy copy of ‘Hunters, Chasers and Carthorses 1975’) and return them to the darkened cave from whence they came. If left undisturbed, they will sleep soundly until the temperature drops to two degrees above freezing and the smell of muddy tweed hangs on the air.
June 17, 2008 at 22:14 #168908At the moment im managing to keep interested in the flat but i know full well that come September i will be aching for it to get going again and to help keep my mind on the flat im going to the Haydock reciprocal at Goodwood on Leger day to keep me on the level so to speak.
Still think Ascot needs something like the Royal Chase over 4m as a prelude to the Gold Cup.

Has anyone here ever tried to shoot fish in a barrel? I bet it’s anything but easy, especially if it’s a big barrel and not many fish. It’s probably pretty messy as well.
I suspect that what Grasshopper is really trying to tell us is that he has finally seen the light and come over from the dark side.
