Forgotten Rules left a lasting impression on me when he ran away with his bumper at Punchestown. What’s most surprising about that run was that he was allowed to go off around the even money mark, such was his evident superiority from some way out. He then ran at the Galway Festival over m 6f and gave the 102 rated Shu Lewis a pound and an eight length thrashing. I’m delighted to see him declared for this race tomorrow and although it’s a massive step up in class I think he can give more than a good account of himself. I’ve big respect for Leading Light but I was disappointed he couldn’t get closer to Brown Panther in the Irish Leger and think Forgotten Rules represents a step up from some of the opposition he’s faced this season. Have taken 4/1 each way about Weld’s horse.

    Good luck THM.

Forgotten Rules looks a fascinating contender, he can find the improvement needed for sure.

That Irish Leger was such a muddle, Kingscote really rode a peach out on the front end. That said, as you say it is disappointing Leading Light couldn’t get closer and he didn’t make up much ground in the homer. Extra test of stamina this time around and been freshened up I think more can be expected, though I wouldn’t want to plough in at 5/2!

I’m staying dry on this race tomorrow but will be watching Forgotten rules keenly.

A somewhat bizarre trend for a long distance race, but the last 9 winners have all been drawn in stalls 1-6.

    2013 Royal Diamond 4 (of 12)
    2012 Rite of Passage 3 (of 9)
    2011 Fame and Glory 2 (of 10)
    2010 Tastahil 3 (of 8 )
    2009 Akmal 6 (of 8 )
    2008 Veracity 6 (of 8 )
    2007 Royal and Regal 1 (of 8 )
    2006 Hawridge Prince 5 (of 7)
    2005 Cover Up 3 (of 10)

I also notice that the last 3 winners had all previously won a Group 1 race and this coincides with the race being added to the Champions Day card. Seems to attract better horses as a result. Leading Light and Estimate are the only Group 1 winners. Leading Light took this year’s Ascot Gold Cup and Estimate won it last year.

    Estimate 7/1 e/w for me.

    Good luck !!

I’ve backed Forgotten Rules for The Ascot Gold Cup. In a sad development, but useful from a selfish point of view, it seems like Leading Light may have run his last race according to his trainer.

Not long after I placed my bet the news broke that Leading Light suffered suspensory injuries to both front legs yesterday and the likelihood is that he won’t race again.

Even if he does come back, will he be the same again? The Weld horse seems the one with scope and I fancied him to rise to the top next year anyway. With Leading Light perhaps out of it, it is hard to see a better contender for Royal Ascot next June.

Ladbrokes are still showing 5/1 on Oddschecker and it’s worth a phone call to see if that’s still available.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
