Starters are often definitely too fussy, agreed – I find myself thinking this every day of the week.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"November 21, 2021 at 16:17 #1568403In jump races you get horses lining up in front if they want to be prominent and in behind if wanting to be held up and / or needing to be settled in behind horses. I don’t see what’s wrong with that. Having stalls would make it harder for jockeys finding their preferred position… Front / prominent racers downing tools more often because they can’t see the front and more horses pulling because they’ve got too much light.
…And we can’t have a fight for a stall so we’d need a draw too.
Imagine us form students needing to consider draw advantage in the Welsh Grand National.

Nah, sorry Ian; don’t need a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
Value Is EverythingNovember 21, 2021 at 17:29 #1568410You don’t have to apologise for having a contrary opinion to mine, GT.
After all, it’s not as if you are God (sorry if that’s a bombshell – it certainly was for me when someone told me I’m not God either the other day) and your opinions are all facts.
Are there no front runners, prominent runners and hold-up horses on the Flat, then?
We both know there are and stalls don’t prevent jockeys taking up a position in the first furlong.
To be fair, I’ve not aware of Jump racing anywhere on the planet using stalls (someone please supply the info if it’s done anywhere) so I don’t think we will see stalls trialled in Jump racing anytime soon, but I wouldn’t rule it out if there’s ever another “Esha Ness” National.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"November 21, 2021 at 20:33 #1568439Starting stalls are used for jump races in Australia (admittedly only around 100 races a year and from next year only in Victoria state) and I believe also in Japan and NZ.
Also noting that max field size for jumps in Oz is low (think it’s 12).
November 21, 2021 at 20:35 #156844012??? Most UK jumps racecourses would give their proverbial right arm for that many runners!
November 21, 2021 at 20:43 #1568443Thank you, CarryOnKatie – life is an eternal learning curve.

Oh no bombshell, Ian. I do not believe in any Gods, therefore it is impossible to be someone that does not exist.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. Stalls in jump racing would create more problems than it solves for all the reasons previously given.

I can always happily do that.
I want to see a Jumps race with starting stalls from outside the UK now – any YouTube links gratefully received!

Though I’m in agreement with the view that starting stalls are unnecessary for Jumps races.
November 21, 2021 at 23:56 #1568480Australia also has ground nowhere near as soft as in Britain. Australia wouldn’t have a problem pulling stalls off the track.
Value Is EverythingNovember 22, 2021 at 05:33 #1568495Thank you, Marlingford and fair comment, GT.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"November 22, 2021 at 11:14 #1568512Something surreal about seeing those stalls open and less than 15 seconds later they’re….jumping the first!

November 22, 2021 at 12:09 #156852140 stalls open and they’re off across The Melling Road towards the first – deep down, you know you want to see it, Marlingford!
Ok, maybe not….

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"November 22, 2021 at 14:14 #1568552Will they be using stalls in the next “Who’s Your Favourite Authoritarian Dictator National”?
It might be an unusual experience for them, given that they are used to locking up people instead of being locked up themselves.
November 22, 2021 at 18:48 #1568578It’s a VERY good question….
