I thought FOG ran okay considering the setback and it being his first run back

“Let’s be honest it’s been a season without a superstar , it happens , you could argue the same in last year’s nh season”

If Ombudsman were to win the next he’d make a strong case for it.

Potential superstars that fluffed their lines a plenty, I think if either Ombudsman of Delacroix wins this they will likely be horse of the year although I do think Minnie Hauk isn’t far behind and probably would have been if she had held on to win the Arc.

They could be horse of the year but not a superstar , let’s see what happens , if one wins with authority then there’s a argument

Hopefully this overhyping of Field Of Gold now ends.

Well done VTC. To be honest I don’t think its Champions Day, the races on the round track made sense, the group 1’s on the straight track are at the whim of the draw/pace when its a big field and you get loads of these random results on the Ascot straight, Royal Ascot is even worse because they try and cancel out the biases with random watering and then the favoured side changes from day to day. I don’t think the straight track at Ascot is actually a very fair course but no less than most I suppose, we’ve seen plenty of races at Newmarket with the same problem.

I’d revise what I said above actually about it not being a fair track. There isn’t a part of the track you want to be on necessarily I just think big fields and where the optimal pace is rather than a specific draw would be the crucial bit and its probably true of any straight track where there’s a big field. There was a bias at Haydock in the Sprint Cup too. You get a big field and they normally split and its in the lap of the horsey gods as to which group you want to be in and there’s no real way of knowing beforehand if you’ve had a bet where the optimal pace is, sometimes you know where the front runners are but then they go too hard and there’s nothing to carry the rest of the field behind them for the final couple of furlongs and the other side gets it.

I hope the lion in winter stays in training. Clearly has had ringworm and if he can get over it and strengthen up must be there or thereabouts next year. Field of gold just not as good as press made out I’m afraid. As for the winner. Delighted for all the connections especially the rider. So happy to see big prizes spread around though why they insist on waiting with lion in winter baffles me. I feel had he gone earlier it would have been very close.

I think it is a bit harsh to judge FOG on todays run – on the wrong side of the course for a start and came through with a challenging looking run that seemed to flatten out and I would imagine that a combination of match and general fitness was what found him out.

It was interesting to see ITV show a reply that showed that Cicero’s Gift and FOG were actually upsides each other (albeit one on the outside and one on the inside of the course) as they were approaching the part where the straight course joins the round course. It showed that they both started their runs pretty much at the same time.

This run would probably have put FOG spot on for his next run but I am not sure a BC Mile (his only real option) will suit him given his size and hold up tactics but I do think it is well worth bringing him back next season.
