    1140pm Colonial Downs 1m2f

11 runners, the majority of which either look a bit out of form or have run well recently albeit in a lower grade. Atone is the current fav at 3/1 best but he comes into this off the back of a grade 3 fifth at Pimlico over 9 furlongs.

The intriguing one for me is Catnip (took 9/1) now a general 17/2 who was 2nd in a grade 1 last time when running over a furlong further. In running comments – Chased clear leader, closed over 3f out, led 2 1/2f out, hard pressed from 2f out, rallied well under pressure, headed final 110yds, not match pace of winner
He won over 9f before that (Grade 3), both runs at Monmouth Park. If he can steal a bit of a march at some point in the race he could be hard to catch.

    Catnip 9/1 4 places

P.S. – This was run at Churchill Downs last year but re-named the Mister D stakes after Arlington Park’s closure the year before. I think Colonial has now taken over the race with it’s original name for the foreseeable but don’t quote me on that.

Way before my time Glad, thanks for sharing though, made me have a look into it. First major winner in the US for a European horse for 14 years. 38/1 on the US market, 5/1 back home.

I picked the wrong European challenger; I backed Be My Native, who I had seen win the Coronation Cup a couple of months earlier. 😂

I was a big Tolomeo fan and not only did. back him and take the local Pari-Mutuel odds (he was 6/1 with the UK bookmakers) I never realised for years afterwards that my local bookmaker Jack Ferens in Hull (long gone now) hadn’t realised (and neither had I) dividends were to a $2 stake so effectively paid me out at 38/1, double the actual dividend.

I remember walking into another Hull independent betting shop the morning after the race and its owner Nigel Culbert immediately saying to me: “Did you have a bet on that Arlington Million because one of ‘your horses’ has won it and it’s paid out at massive odds over there and all the bookies here are going mental about it!”
