The 2.40 at Carlisle today pitches three horses (well at least two!!) together who have distant hopes of making the Arkle.
First up – Doeslessthanme from the Howard-Johnson stable looks the type to improve for the switch to chasing. My biggest problem is that I can’t in a million years see Cheltenham suiting him. His best form has been on sharp tracks and with decent ground seeming to help. I imagine even if he wins a few races on his way to a rating in the high 140’s he will swerve the Arkle.
Next up is Mirage Dore from the Dobbin yard will need to also show consistent improvement throughout the season to make an Arkle contender. Since moving over from France most of his outings have been over at least 2m 4f and I just cannot see him having the speed to stay in the race (staying up the hill should be no problem). I expect come March he will be rated around 135 and competing over 2m4f-2m5f.
Contender number three is Songe from the Charlie Longsdon stable. He was certainly the best of these over hurdles and if he translates that form to fences this year then he nay be in with a squeak. The question marks are his taking to fences, last year he started in his novice at Sandown and ran a cracker to finish third behind Free World and Gauvain and in front of last years Arkle third, Planet of Sound. In his subsequent race he broke a blood vessel and was returned to hurdles where once agin he improved winning the Champion Hurdle trial at Haydock. Stable reports suggest he has been very heavily schooled and has taken well to it. If he does enjoy the jumping game this season he may be an each way shot come the Arkle in March???????

October 22, 2009 at 11:46 #254751Good luck Nick – 12 inch nail job
October 22, 2009 at 11:58 #254754LOL. Very best of, sir! I trust you’ve got your "Affront to the eyeballs" speech rehearsed in the event of an RUK post-win interview?

Although Doeslessthanme is a nice horse he is not their Arkle horse. Silk Drum is their Arkle horse this year and made a pleasing start the other day at Kelso….
October 22, 2009 at 12:25 #254760I’m hopeful that Mirage Dore will be decent over fences. However, as a note of caution it may be worth pointing out that Rose Dobbin’s runners have struggled to date.

October 22, 2009 at 12:58 #254766Think Fiendish Flame could give a few of these a scare. Wouldn’t have quite as high a profile as a few of these but very much type to make a chaser.
October 22, 2009 at 13:29 #254774Only The Best ran a blinder staying on into third – definitely a 3 1/4m+ chaser in the making.

I think you will find he was a very, very, very unlucky second, Martin!

Well done fella. More power to your elbow!
October 22, 2009 at 17:40 #254801Dunno if you felt the same way when you first got involved in ownership, rory, but I was getting the weirdest sensations today. Can’t remember when I’ve ever felt quite so chuffed about backing a loser – I’m left wondering whether I’m maybe in too deep.
After todays very,
very
pleasing effort from Georgie (his pet name), I can well understand how people with more cash than me – Wylie, Johnson, McManus, Hemmings, Delargy and the rest of the super-rich – find ownership a more than somewhat compulsive activity.
I think it’s long odds-on that I will find it very difficult to avoid backing Georgie in future races – regardless of his form chance. It’s like Dorans Pride all over again (now if only he could turn out as good as that one).

A decent staying pedigree and if the name’s anything to go by you’ll be expecting just a tad more from him
Timeform weren’t too impressed lto
ONLY THE BEST did more to suggest he’s not entirely straightforward just 10 days on from his Towcester effort,
but what do they know…
No doubt he’ll be winning sometime in late winter along with the rest of Ferdy’s
October 22, 2009 at 18:14 #254809Good luck Grasshopper. I shall monitor his progress with interest.
October 22, 2009 at 18:17 #254810October 22, 2009 at 21:15 #254838I had Doeslessthanme (i was also there in attendance) today and i was happy with his run. Although i think he goes best at 2,2 rather than just 2 miles. Pace may be a bit much for him.

Grassy, that tingling feeling and nervous tension will always be there forever ,part of the game and the thrill. Hope you have plenty more in the future. Mind you I have got to the stage a long time ago ,when I haven`t got to back them ,just because their mine, thank God. You`ll go skint thst way.
Maybe one day we can join the illustrious list above together. - AuthorPosts
