Not that I buy the Guardian but I curled up when Cue Card’s trainer was quoted as comparing him to Arkle if his comments were to be interpreted so. The horse looks good but one might as well compare the 2 year old Frankel with Nijinsky at this stage ! Comparisons are odious but comparing ANY chaser with Arkle is bordering on dementia…and I should know !

Yes, I am of the Arkle/Mill House era oldjohn so I find any comparison with the great horse rather irksome [never a good thing to say that sort of thing about any horse; when his trainer said that Coulton ‘who?’ was going to be the next Desert Orchid I instantly took against the poor horse]. However, it’s like I said on the Cue Card thread, he does have a ‘look’ about him, and that look did remind me of Arkle, so perhaps what the trainer said may have been taken out of context.

I haven’t seen the article but I suspect if a comparison was made it wasn’t meant to be taken at all seriously. Arkle didn’t reach any great heights in bumpers or over hurdles and it could be given the start Cue Card has made that he will be jumping fences later rather than sooner.

Well, I expect it is doubtful, since Arkle’s superiority was so mind-boggling, but I wouldn’t mind betting that Cue Card has a very large (physical) heart.

Cue Card is one of my favourite horses in training at the moment…

Mo can you remember who the trainer was who was blowing Coultons trumpet even suggesting he would win the Gold Cup?

Fire at a building 100 yards away. Rescue Rooms had to be evacuated, but, thankfully it and Rock City were ok. I’m hopefuly going to the Levellers Levelling the Land 20th anniversary gig next spring, so I was a wee bit worried. Can’t imagine there being no Rock City…

    From the Guardian website:

"Having hammered a quality field, Cue Card was slashed to 3-1 favourite for the Supreme Novice Hurdle at next year’s Cheltenham Festival, but there is widespread suspicion that connections may be tempted to forget the novice race and pitch him straight in against the very best in the Champion Hurdle, for which he is 20-1. How about it, the trainer was asked.

"I don’t want to compare anything," said Tizzard, "but Arkle won the Gold Cup as a five-year-old. So it wouldn’t be the stupidest thing in the world, would it, to run [Cue Card] in a hurdle? He’ll be five after Christmas."

As eyes opened wide, jaws dropped and pens stopped scribbling, Tizzard clearly realised he may have been a bit rash. "I’m not saying he’s Arkle," he added, but it was too late for backtracking. Now we know that there is no limit on the hopes and expectations held for this horse at his Dorset stable.

As it happens, Tizzard had his facts wrong and Arkle was seven before he won the first of his three Gold Cups, but to dwell on that is to miss the point. At the age of 54, the trainer has finally got his hands on a horse that could win him the sport’s very best prizes."

A quote taken completely out of context by journalists who’d rather jump on (at worst) a slip of the tongue rather than hold racing to account for its dismal failings.

    A nonsense really.

Must be the old age kicking in mate.

I thought when I was reading this thread that Coulton was trained by Oliver Sherwood as I remember the horse well too!

Looking back at the horses history though Mick Easterby did train him and he did run at Nottingham but not win….Easterby managed in 3 runs a fall, a 22 length 3rd of 4 and a PU! Then for Sherwood and Jamie Osbourne it seems the horse realised it’s potential…

My thanks to Armchair jockey for reproducing the actual Guardian article, and also to Antepost King and Moehat for the light hearted diversion into other matters….As an oldie I had never heard of Rock City in Nottingham so its now lodged in my remaining ‘rocky’ brain cells in case I ever get to appear on ‘Millionaire’. What amused me is how some posts have an ‘invitation’ to make this transition’ from the great Arkle and a music venue….bit like Chinese whispers chaps. Some cynics might say ‘I don’t follow this thread’ but I thoroughly enjoy a good ramble…more please.

Geez you had me worried for a minute there Zamorston,i thought the legendary King of racing knowledge was losing his marbles! I remember the day vividly as i was stood at the last hurdle with my trusty Canon and 400 f2.8 lens waiting to catch

    Coulton

jump the last with a 10 length lead,he duly obliged! I had to do a Photographic assignment for my City and guilds certificate so of course i did it on Horse racing,i got some great pictures of

    Wonder Man

    ,

    Sybillin

    and of course

    Coulton

    !
