After seeing the race, i would agree that the first 2 are the 2 to take out of the race today.
Briarius ran an absolutely brilliant race on his comeback, and Imsingingtheblues didnt really do anything wrong, apart from a dodgy jump at the last, which lost him momentum.
Briarius’ jumping was brilliant today, some of the daylight he left between himself and the fences was remarkable, jumped high and jumped very cleanly too.
A good race for the front 2, and i dont think Paul Nicholls will be too dis-heartened with the run of Imsingingtheblues.
November 13, 2008 at 01:38 #189466Calgary Bay would need to find about 10mph. Bar inserting a scud up his backside he won’t win it.
I don’t think pace will be his downfall, Aragorn.
He won a tactical battle at Cheltenham (obviously handles the course) from Snap Tie and I’msingingtheblues, before finding only Breedsbreeze and Deep Purple too good in the Tolworth.
He finished second behind the promising Planet Of Sound on his final start, where Free World was fourth.
Like I said, he’d need to improve to trouble the leading contenders, but with Henrietta Knight making such bullish statements and Tony McCoy insisting he was a potential Arkle horse at the beginning of the year, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss him.
He’s a lovely big horse that looks like he’ll need a fence to bring out the best in him.
I hope all has gone well over the Summer because I expected to see him by now.
November 13, 2008 at 01:42 #189469I’msingingtheblues would have been collared anyway- the mistake wasn’t the difference IMO.
That said, I certainly wouldn’t describe it as a "massively dissapoiniting" run by any means.
Briareus could well turn out to be a Ryanair Chase horse.

I have to confess that I hadn’t really appreciated how strong Briareus’s form with Knight Legend was, so perhaps ‘massively disappointing’ is a touch over the top.
I’ll keep quiet in future
November 13, 2008 at 04:42 #189502What’s the point of keeping quiet on a forum, Equitrack?
Why the identity change BTW?

To be honest, trackside, I was growing tired of the ego battles which were beginning to dominate the forum and, given that I’ve never been shy (other than when Grassy calls me a p*ssy, then I just keep quiet) in saying what I think, I decided to end my membership.
However, it would seem I can only spend so much time away before the craving for an argument with Fists returns

November 16, 2008 at 05:32 #189998Straw Bear turns out today and if he wins he will be near favourite for the Arkle. While not my main choice for the big one the 20/1 on offer was a must EW bet for me.
PN’s is obviusly very useful but all the money so far has been for Straw Bear, He was different class to Tatenan over hurdles and must have a fair chance of beating him.

On the evidence of their fencing debuts, and the potential for improvement in each horse, I can’t see Straw Bear even troubling Tatenen tomorrow. The Nicholls horse was hellishly impressive at Aintree and was always likely to step up a good deal on anything he achieved over hurdles.
My main Arkle interest remains I’msingingtheblues, but Tatenen isn’t a bad saver to have.
November 16, 2008 at 11:06 #190015I never saw the race but on paper I can’t buy that. He was getting almost a stone of some moderate horses at Aintree and you would expect him to have won a race like that hands down if he was an Arkle entry.
I think people are gettting carried away with PN horses and seeing a lot of them better than they actually are.
I’m suprised Bos thinks AP finished as close as he could on Straw Bear as it was blatantly obvious he wasn’t off a yard. They call it a gentle introduction in the Racing Post
His hurdle form is much superior to Tatenen’s and I think it’s worth a gamble to back him before this race for the Arkle. 20/1 seemed nuts to me as there are horses who haven’t jumped a fence shorther than him.
Like you this isn’t my main fancy for the race I am more interested in Ferdy Murphys horse who looks a real chasing type and apparantly was big as a bull when he won at Kelso.
November 16, 2008 at 18:22 #190063Very impressive from Tatenen there.
Have to say i know it is early days for Straw Bear over fences, but i’m not at all convinced by his jumping.

November 16, 2008 at 18:34 #190065nice performance by Tatenen, but 7/2 for arkle is v stingy (despite what A Down might say ) some even quoting 2/1!! . Pathetic bookies running scared again.
November 16, 2008 at 18:42 #190066It does seem very short, i disagreed with him when he stated that he thought it was a ‘fair price’.
However, i am sure the price will lengthen a bit when the other leading contenders for the ante post betting for the Arkle, run more and potentially have a say in things too.
He did well, but it does seem that 3s is a short price at this stage of the season.

As Francombe alluded to today, he’s not a natural over fences and I think AP gave him a nice intro on his chasing debut. Like I said, if McCoy pushed him too hard at Exeter, there’s every chance he would’ve hit a few and lost his confidence.
I’ve always questioned his toughness, Fist. As I said earlier, he’s often struck me as being a bit of a light-weight and his confidence is very fragile. Today was prime example.
He jumped better than I expected today. AP’s ride would’ve give him the world of confidence at Exeter, but he was always going to be asked a few more questions today around a course that takes some jumping for a novice. I said immediately after his debut that he would struggle against the best and I still believe that will be the case.
Tatenen looks a nice prospect, but the Arkle looks very competitive this season and I wouldn’t be in a rush to take 4/1.
I’m still looking forward to seeing Calgary Bay.
