Yeah just saw that and she seemed pretty adamant as well… Obviously wants to find out whether he has got the pace for the Arkle and he should get that with the opposition…
January 16, 2009 at 19:11 #204382I believe AP had already agreed to ride Clay Hollister at Haydock.
Funny race this and it could be run at a dawdle. Hopefully Elsworth will be told to go on if there is no pace. I wouldn’t have thought he would want to get into a sprint him being a big horse.
January 16, 2009 at 21:32 #204423Well as i have previously stated, i see "Calgary Bay" as a 2010 Gold cup
candidate,so in my humblest of opinions i will be amazed if he can beat
the extemely talented "Free World" at those weights over the 2m1f around
Ascot! I am looking at 2 horses for this years Arkle (Forpadydeplasterer and Free world) both who look specialist 2 milers! I will eat my humble pie if i"m wrong, but i haven"t had a slice with a cup of tea for ages!TAPK likes to stay loyal to horses he thinks have ability!I wrote this in January and all 3 are more than capable!A much needed confidence boost today after "Razor" got mugged! He still ran an absolute blinder though!
January 16, 2009 at 23:57 #204474I haven’t been paying much attention due to the snow, ice etc, FOF. Is CB being targeted for the Arkle now? I wonder if he won’t get out-paced, like Racing Demon. His form’s a bit patchy over shorter trips. Maybe connections would be better holding him back for a longer trip at Aintree after all?
January 17, 2009 at 00:25 #204484Free World and Calgary Bay are my two ante post bets for the Arkle…so to be truthful I was hoping they would remain apart before Cheltenham.
Not sure what the best scenario for me is…probably a narrow FW win with the pair well clear.January 17, 2009 at 00:32 #204485I believe AP had already agreed to ride Clay Hollister at Haydock.

Could be run at a dawdle? Have you seen the speed Free World goes at the first couple of fences? He’s like lightening and the first half of his novice race at Sandown was way faster than the pace in Master Minded’s Tingle Creek.
He doesn’t do dawdle Fist.

By all accounts he will go for the Arkle. I wouldn’t put much emphasis on his hurdle form which was never his game. I doubt if they will take CB of his feet he travels very well and was running over the top of the others last time out. So much so I thought he was going to jump over the top of those in front of him
Seriously he look in need of a stronger pace and the faster they go at Cheltenham the better, If he is a long term 2m4f 3m horse that will only be in his favour as stamina is always a factor round there.
IAN: To be honest I have never seen Free World run I was going just on hs form…I noticed he made all 2 races ago then was held up.
I hope he does set a strong pace. Then I will have a better idea if my 40/1 bet is on a 3/1 shot or a 300/1 shot

He wasn’t held up Fist. They tried to just ease his franetic pace very early on last time but he was soon in front then they just let him go again. It doesn’t suit the horse to be held on to.
January 17, 2009 at 01:47 #204502FIST,
if there was a horse to avoid at the moment over 2m its "Free world"
i will be amazed if next years Gold cup winner can beat "Free" over such an inadequate trip! This "Free world" is going to run "Calgary" off his feet
he really is that good! "Araldur" is a bit special too, he could be a "King
George" horse. That Sandown form is the form for the Arkle easily the best
race 2 novices have run in to date!January 17, 2009 at 06:02 #204584AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
Today’s race will be vaguely informative, but if Free World is the best two-mile novice around then we’re in for a disappointing year.
I also have significantly lower expectations of Calgary Bay, though it is Somersby of Henrietta Knight’s that I’ll be monitoring in the closing novice hurdle.
January 17, 2009 at 06:10 #204588I thnk Free World is a very good horse on his conditions, which he is more likely to get tomorrow than at cheltenham IMO.
Calgary Bay I would think would be better round cheltenham than ascot IMO and wouldnt be too surprised if he is turned over tomorrow.

race 2 novices have run in to date!On a serious note if this Free World and Araldur are so special they are helluva big prices for the Arkle.
Hen has got Gold Cup fever way too soon IMO………..Calgary Bay was running all over the top of the oposition last time out and was crying out be going faster……..I can’t see this Free World being any kind of threat to Calgary Bay.
January 17, 2009 at 10:00 #204596Calgary Bay beat Snap Tie in a tactical race last season and gave Free World 6lbs and a 6L beating over this distance, too.
Why are so many calling him slow?
Free World was beaten by a talented, tough horse at Sandown last time, but Aruldar isn’t exactly a world beater and, like Calgary Bay, he’ll also be better over further.
The track, which will suit Free World, and the loss of AP will be the two factors against the horse. Dominic Elsworth is a very good jockey, but AP seems to really like this horse and they get on very well together.
I wonder who, given the chance, AP would choose to ride in the race?
Todays race should tell us more about Paul Nicholls ‘pecking order’ for the Arkle. Calgary Bay was beaten by I’msingingtheblues on his chasing debut at Doncaster.
Nothing less than an emphatic win for Free World will convince me he’ll confirm the form at Cheltenham. He has more in his favour today than Calgary Bay, who also has more options if well beaten.
January 17, 2009 at 16:03 #204637Free World and Araldur posted very high ratings on my system for their Sandown runs I think its very, very good 2 mile novice form. I’m by no means convinced that Cheltenham would be Free World’s track ideally but a small field at Ascot like today should hold no fears for him. I have him rated well clear of the overhyped Calgary Bay on my ratings and I expect Free World to put Henrietta’s horse well and truely in his place this afternoon. As Calgary has a lot of supporters I was hoping they’d make the price for Free World today but he’s too short for me to back.
Last years form was hurdles form this is chasing = different ball game.
January 17, 2009 at 18:53 #204686Already replied in Big Races section. Ground looked softer at Ascot than expected and it certainly didn’t suit Free World who IMO barely gets two miles.
Good run from Panjo Bere and Calgary Bay but either of them an Arkle winner? Hmmm, not totally convinced.
January 17, 2009 at 20:05 #204706It’s not a great renewal, Ian.
Calgary Bay loves Cheltenham, jumps well, travels well and stays well. As I said before, he’s also a lot quicker than you think.
Kicking King ran Well Chief close in ’04, and with the victories of My Way De Solzen and Tidal Bay in recent years, it’s a huge advantage if you have a horse that stays further than two miles.
At this time, I can’t think of another horse that has more ticks in the right boxes.
I mentioned before today that his jumping puts others under pressure and it will be interesting to see how Tatenen reacts if this horse looms upsides.
January 17, 2009 at 21:15 #204730ALSO POSTED IN THE BIG RACE SECTION
Certainly never dented my confidence in the horse for a couple of reasons.
The minute I saw 4/5 Free World and 9/4 being offered about CB I was more tha suspicious that CB might be just a bit short for this.
Perhaps she has taken a leaf out of Nicky Henderson’s book who tends to run them a bit short pre chelters.
I also thought Elsworth was riding him to beat one horse. Free World was outclassed IMO and went out like a light turning for home.If he hadn’t I doubt if the eventual winner would have got back into it. Once he did it became a bit of a sprint which is the very thing you wouldn’t want involved in with abig horse like CB.
Having said that despite balloning the last he has run on well and showed that 2m4f will be his min distance in the future.
With a strong gallop, the stiff course and thisa being a pretty poor renewal I would think he has an excellent chance of winning the Arkle.
