The great penalty debate.
Everton v Liverpool, 94th minute. An Everton corner is swung into the box. Carragher appears to have his arms around Lescott and drags him to the floor. The referee, having awarded Liverpool 2 penalties and sent 2 of the Everton players off, is stood 5 yards away, has a perfect view, and decides against a penalty.
For me it’s a clear penalty, one of the clearest I have ever seen. You take a risk when you put your arms on an opposing player, you take an even bigger risk when you put 2 arms around an opposing player – and you are in massive danger of giving a penalty away if you put both arms round an opponent and pull him to the floor. Well that’s what I thought anyway.
Rafa Benitez: "In England, you don’t like to see players diving, so it was a surprise to me". Benitez accusing Lescott of diving

Jamie Carragher: "It wasn’t a penalty, this is a mans game". Yes Jamie, this is a mans game, but its’ also a mans game of football not rugby.

Jamie Redknapp: "I don’t think it was a penalty, did he (Lescott) have his arms on him (Carragher)". Redknapp suggesting that because Lescott had a hand on Carragher, then that entitles Carragher to put both arms around Lescott and drag him to the floor

The above 3 people are a Liverpool manager, a Liverpool player, and an ex Liverpool player, now a very irritating and rude pundit, who talks over everyone and clearly annoys his co presenters/pundits… anyway, i’m drifiting from the point

Are the above 3 people correct to say it was a penalty, suggest Lescott dived etc – or are they being bias.
Everyone else I have spoke to, everyone else I have heard on tv or read in the papers today suggest it was a clear penalty.
Anyone got any views, other than to say, "Mike, go and have your coffee and stop writing long boring posts"

October 21, 2007 at 09:31 #120745Of the 3 comments you use, only Benitez’s shocks me, as that is a pretty heavy accusation to lie about! Carragher has got to deny it as he is the perpetrator, and Redknapp is a pretty poor pundit.
Not everyone connected with Liverpool saw it the same way either. On MotD last night Alan Hansen likened Carragher’s ‘marking’ to ‘assault’!
October 21, 2007 at 11:07 #120767FIFA appear to be counteracting against the diving epidemic by allowing defenders to basically manhandle the forward in the box.
October 21, 2007 at 19:11 #120818mike i agree with you. The standard of reffing is crap. Rugby is even harder to ref but they at least use video. Yes there is debate about the final yesterday but when o when will football go the same way? It will not spoil the game.
