From Daily Telegraph:-
“Council vetoes flag of St George after concerns raised about links to Crusades
A local council decided against flying the flag of St George after concerns were raised that it would offend the town’s 16 Muslim residents.
Eleanor Jackson, a university lecturer, said the red and white symbol could cause upset in Radstock, Somerset, because it was used during the Crusades 1,000 years ago.
The Labour councillor voiced her concerns at a meeting called to discuss which flag should be purchased to fly atop the town’s repaired civic flagpole.
She said: “My big problem is that it is offensive to some Muslims…… The rainbow flag of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride movement will be flown at “appropriate” times of the year while an In Bloom flag will celebrate the town’s achievements in the gardening competition.
The objections raised about the flag of St George were branded “oversensitive” by the local Muslim community while the Muslim Council of Britain said England’s patron saint should not be associated with “any hatred of Muslims”.
Or is it just Labour councillors?

I would suggest 95% of Councillors are interfering busybodies who simply do the job as an ego trip and / or the expenses, whose life is unfulfilled if they fail to get a mention in the local rag at least once a week – and that is irrelevant of any party political allegiance.
I have little time for politicians at any level but I find the "lower" the level of the political spectrum the more insidious the politicians are …… and don’t even get me started on Parish Councils!!!!
As for the flag issue – frankly why is there a need to fly any flags at all? What does flying a flag prove?
May 17, 2013 at 08:28 #439796If they are so worried about offending the Muslim community thenI wouldn’t have thought flying the Gay Pride flag would be particularly clever.

Flag flying should remain the preserve of those little nationalistic countries with chips on their shoulder, an inferiority complex and a feeling they have something to prove
It has long been to England’s credit that St George’s Day passes largely unnoticed and unheralded; therefore it’s a little bit sad that there seems to be a growing movement to celebrate it

Post of the year Drone – well said
May 18, 2013 at 13:10 #439968I agree with Drone – although something would be nice to celebrate the dam-busters raid on Germany. O wait?

June 23, 2013 at 09:52 #443761Good-oh Nathan, you can count me in once again and in the absence of former resident cricket boffin Andrew Hughes I hope the current incumbent Betlarge will pad-up or turn his arm over
The first Test is at Trent Bridge on 10th July isn’t it? so I’ll have the pinecone and seaweed out earlier that week
No Test at Headingley, which is a bit of a sacrilegious bummer though if I get the urge a day-trip to its apparent replacement, Chester-Le-Street may be enjoyed
June 23, 2013 at 10:28 #443765I’ve tweeted Andrew so hope he dons his whites, miss his contributions to forum land. At least you can hold onto the title as Headingley champion Drone for at least another 4 years.
