Riot police were called in to restore order after a brawl on The Hill after racing yesterday.

Fighting broke out after racing, with the police eventually taking the decision to close all the outlets on The Hill and clearing the public from The Hill, meaning the actions of a small minority ruined the day for all those enjoying the day on the hill.

At one point there were 14 vans of police officers in full riot gear, two special response units and I lost count the number of police cars on scene.

One scene made me smile as two police officers in full riot gear were marching a guy to the police compound as he partner / wife /other half was following behind haranguing the officers – I have to say facing her would be more terrifying than facing any riot cops.

Yes, but can we confirm where the incident took place? Word on the street says it was The Hill? ;-)

It is sad to hear that Epsom has experienced trouble. I am uncomfortable in big crowds at the best of times but the steady degeneration of crowd behaviour at the big racing meetings puts me off even more. With the prohibitive ticket prices, poor viewing, overpriced concessions and swathes of tanked-up tossers I don’t even want to attend the big days any more. You’d have to rate ‘the atmosphere’ incredibly highly to view it as a +EV life decision.

Every incident makes me even less likely to attend. Why would I give up my comfy swivel chair, cup of tea and Coral TV on a Saturday afternoon? I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling that way, which is a real shame. Racing fans shouldn’t feel marginalised by their own sport on the biggest occasions.

I rarely go racing now for that reason, I live about 30 minutes away from Newmarket and used to go regularly to their evening meetings, but they are far too rowdy for me now. I think it is a general thing though not the fault of racing itself or the courses, many town centres are no go areas in the evening now.

Yes the “big one” was on The Hill – it began in the area of the stage and although the age range of those arrested was widespread it was a “youth element” which started the trouble.

I’m guessing alcohol played it’s part but what I did find interesting was walking through the area after it had been cleared was the large number of empty spirit bottles lying around – you come to expect beer cans / bottle’s, champagne / wine bottles but it’s the first time I’ve seen so many discarded spirits bottles.

There were some, isolated, but unrelated incidents in the main enclosures as well

Not really a surprise anymore unfortunately.

I was offered “outside” in the Arkle bar at Cheltenham by some spotty oik in an Aquascutum scarf ,for the crime of not getting out of his way quickly enough. In fairness though he was probably in a rush to get in the jungle and have his £5 ew on a 7/1 shot.

I know we need to get more people interested in the sport, but I really do wish these sort of people would just FOAD.

I am hoping to attend racing at York next month (8th July), I’ve never been there before. Does anyone know what the behaviour of the crowd is usually like at York? Anywhere to avoid that type of thing.

The problem is that there are more people going racing for the occasion rather than anything to do with the actual racing. It is a day out, a glorified piss-up for far too many. You get the impression those running the show are only interested on bums on seats. Impossible to turn things around as I guess many of the true enthusiasts no longer bother going.

    IBracing,

You shouldn’t have any problems with crowd behaviour on July 8th as that’s a Friday afternoon and there’ll be less than 15,000 present. But don’t think ‘this is nice’ and go back the following day, as the Saturday meeting is sponsored by a brewery and gets a crowd of 40,000.

That’s pretty much what I figured. I plan to take a young lady so I thought it probably wise to avoid John Smiths day and do Summer Stakes day instead.

    Thanks for the reply apracing.
