Nope Mamoud was French bred trained at Newmarket and his owner was a pakistani
October 15, 2012 at 19:59 #416865A topical question.
What do the Wertheimer family Arc winners all have in common.
They were all 4-y-o fillies at the time, Ivanjica, Gold River, and now Solemia.
Well done Rory. Needless to say the combination of a Wertheimer trained filly and the ARc has a special place in my memory!
Here’s an easy question to pass the time while wewait for Yeats to remember we’re here.
Name the Egyptian who won the Epsom Derby?
Would that be Maurice Zilber, trainer of 1976 hero Empery? Although known primaril;y as a French trainer, he was actually born in Cairo in 1920 and trained there from 1946 to 1962. He also trained the great Dahlia and was the chief handler of Nelson Bunker Hunt’s European string.

November 2, 2012 at 01:30 #418871I suppose I am supposed to have asked another question
Here goes. But before I do I am surprised the winner of the West Berkshire Racing Club annual Racing Quiz has thus far fought shy of joining this fun ans informative thread
Here goes then (sort of topical):
1)
Three owners have seen their colours carried to success in both the Epsom Derby and Breeders Cup Classic (one twice!). Name the owners, the horses and the years.2)
Only four men have owned the winners of the Kentucky Derby and Epsom Derby. Name them, their horses, and the years. Also for an extra point one of them is distinct from the other three – for what reason?November 2, 2012 at 22:12 #4189351)
Three owners have seen their colours carried to success in both the Epsom Derby and Breeders Cup Classic (one twice!). Name the owners, the horses and the years.a) John Galbreath owned Derby winner Roberto (1972) and BC Classic winner Proud Truth (1985).
b) Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum owned Derby winners Nashwan (1989) and Erhaab (1994) and BC Classic winner Invasor (2006).
c) Princess Haya of Jordan owned Derby winner New Approach (2008) and BC Classic winner Raven’s Pass (2008).

Only four men have owned the winners of the Kentucky Derby and Epsom Derby. Name them, their horses, and the years. Also for an extra point one of them is distinct from the other three – for what reason?a) Michael Tabor – High Chaparral* 2002/Thunder Gulch 1995
b) John Gabreath – Roberto 1972/Proud Clarion 1967/Chateaugay 1963
c) Ahmed Salman – Oath 1999/War Emblem 2002
d) Paul Mellon – Mill Reef 1971/Sea Hero 1993Tabor has owned shares in several Derby winners, but High Chaparral was the one who won in his colours. He is the only one of the quartet who had the horses racing under his name, rather than that of a stable/business – Galbreath owned Darby Dan Farm, Ahmed Salman’s winners were under the guise of the Thoroughbred Corporation, and Paul Mellon’s Sea Hero ran in the colours of Rokeby Stables.
November 3, 2012 at 18:28 #419035Well done Rory. Over to you!
November 21, 2012 at 13:32 #420441As no further question forthcoming as yet I will throw one in…what was Nicky Henderson the first trainer to do since before the 2nd World War when saddling Binocular to win the Champion Hurdle in 2010 ?
November 22, 2012 at 12:19 #420496He was the first trainer since Vic Smyth to win the Champion Hurdle in consecutive years with different horses.
November 22, 2012 at 12:25 #420498Well done Bachelors Hall and I gave that "stat" to Big Mac BEFORE the Champion Hurdle of 2010, when Binocular won it and I backed him, though Tanya Stevenson dismissed me saying "it wasn’t going to happen"
Of course she knew best !!
Over to you now !
November 22, 2012 at 14:54 #420508OK..as there seems to be a delay here’s another to keep you all amused…..
What did Ireland achieve in the year 2000 which they hadn’t achieved since 1958 previously ?
November 22, 2012 at 15:53 #420514I don’t know if there’s an actual thread etiquette but I reckon giving people more than a couple of hours to respond with a question of their own would be a part of that.
Not to dissuade you from posting as it’s always welcome to see active new members on here. Just saying
Anyways, I’ll hazard a guess at winning the Arc and the Grand National in the same year.
November 22, 2012 at 16:21 #420515Point taken, BH…though there was an 18 days delay between the previous question and the first one I posted here !!
Anyway, your answer to the current question is also correct…though the answer I was looking for was that Ireland won the Grand National and the Derby in the same year for the first time since 1958….another "stat" I provided to Big Mac on course at Epsom BEFORE the Derby was run….trouble is I backed the wrong Irish horse,Aristotle, who was unplaced whilst Sinndar won it !
I was at Longchamp for the Arc that year and was pleased to collect a tidy sum on Sinndar as he turned over Montjeu !
OK…now over to you …take two !
November 22, 2012 at 16:35 #420518I was very pleased to see the thread reignited after it had lay dormant for so long. Not quite as pleased to return home with a question in mind only for the rug to be pulled from beneath my feet
That was a very memorable Arc. I remember being firmly in the Montjeu camp but he just lost his edge at the wrong time.
Who was the last horse to contest the Triumph Hurdle, the Arkle, the Gold Cup and the Grand National? (Not all in the same season of course)
November 22, 2012 at 16:37 #420520Commanche Court
November 22, 2012 at 17:17 #420521It’s a good answer, but it’s not right.
November 22, 2012 at 21:21 #420528Cerium, or Contraband?
