Burrough Hill Lad won the Hennessy on 24th November and the Charlie Hall on 8th December.
I don’t know why the Charlie Hall was so late – perhaps you can let us know (postponed fixture?).
Quite remarkable that he then followed up in the King George at Kempton in which there were only 3 runners! He finished up winning the Gainsborough Chase as a walk over.. Shows how the modern system of (later) entries with supplementaries and re-opened declarations has really improved this situation.
November 12, 2013 at 22:38 #458134Spot on, Adrian. The Charlie Hall was run late ‘as an experiment by Wetherby’, not repeated as it clashed with the Kennedy Construction Gold Cup (known to us oldies as the Massey Ferguson.
November 14, 2013 at 18:53 #458318Not very topical but I’ve just discovered a horse which won three races at the same Royal Ascot meeting! Can you name him and the races?

Verneuil – won the Queen’s Vase, Ascot Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes.
November 16, 2013 at 13:18 #458623Yes in 1877. Well done Miss Woodford, over to you…
Of course we’ve had Choisir and Simenon winning a brace, in recent years, but winning three must have been remarkable even back then.
November 17, 2013 at 01:12 #458713Four horses that ran at the 2013 Cheltenham festival have since been seen over American hurdles. Name them.
This shouldn’t be as hard as it was when I asked this question for the 2012 festival.
November 19, 2013 at 11:09 #458960I can only name three of them:
Hunt Ball
Changing Times
Constant ContactDon’t know the other one. I thought it was Meganisi but he didn’t run at the Festival.
Can you explain training flat races to me. I see Royal Bench won a 7f training race at a jumps meeting. He was 2nd in Hong Kong Mile and 4th in Dubai Duty Free not so long ago so thought this was extraordinary!

You’ve got 3 of the 4. The other one is a graded-stakes quality hurdler from a big-time stable who unlike Hunt Ball didn’t embarrass himself first time out here.
A training flat race is a special kind of flat race run under NSA rules. No purse is awarded and the results are not officially recorded (i.e. it won’t show up on past performances). Typically a $500 prize goes to the winning owner and trainer. These races are generally used to get a horse fit off a layoff or to acclimate a young horse to the idiosyncrasies of jumps courses. Some are restricted to amateur and/or apprentice riders.
The Charleston Trials, 1st meet of the year, is all training races. It’s held on St. Patrick’s Day weekend so the prizes are special
http://www.nationalsteeplechase.com/wp- … _final.pdfRoyal Bench has actually been running on the flat most of this year, with rather limited succcess (although he won a minor stakes race at Delaware). He won his first start over hurdles on November 10 at Charleston, and I expect he’ll be staying over jumps next year.
November 21, 2013 at 13:34 #459188No I’m sorry can’t work it out..
I see there are no betting returns on the National Steeplechase site. I presume there is betting at the flat tracks (Belmont, Parx, Saratoga etc) but is there betting at the jumping courses?
I see there is a link to Jump2bet but that service doesn’t seem to be working..

Hint: He was trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by AP McCoy.
No betting at most of the jumps meets. Fair Hill managed to get approval for wagering at their meeting, although they’ve only got a handful of machines and only on-course betting is allowed. Great Meadow has been battling for years to allow betting at the Virginia Gold Cup meet – they finally got it this spring. Again, only on-course.
A few years ago the NSA made Jump2Bet with the idea that users were supposed to be able to bet on flat (and hopefully jumps) tracks and whatever fees they paid would go to the NSA (who are in dire need of money). The amount of legal wrangling and money required just to get this sort thing set up turned out to be too much, so the NSA gave up and the wagering platform wound up not being used.
November 22, 2013 at 21:51 #459345You’re a mine of information Miss Woodford – many thanks for your informative details on this thread!
Sorry still can’t work it out though! The only 4 horses that AP rode for Henderson at this year’s Festival were My Tent or Yours, Nadiya de la Vega, Binocular and Molotof and none of them ran in the States.
Was it one that Henderson subsequently ran in the States? Don’t remember this and surely AP would only have ridden it if owned by JP.
Still stumped!

You might want to look again…
November 24, 2013 at 00:35 #459623MOLOTOF(FR) ran at Percy Warner on 11th May 2013.
Backing two runners is the relentless pursuit of value. Backing each way is a shortcut to the poor house. Only 7% make a long term profit.

Yep! He finished 3rd in the Iroquois Steeplechase (G3), a 3-mile hurdle. Took the lead around the ~2 mile point and held it for a while until he got overtaken by Divine Fortune and Demonstrative. He was bought by Mary Ann Houghland (widow of longtime Iroquois Steeplechase Chairman Calvin Houghland), who you may recall bought the Nicholls-trained novice hurdler Pierrot Lunaire and turned him into a champion over here.
I think you or Adrian can pick the next question. Fight it out amongst yourselves.
Incidentally, the winner of the
amateur training flat
at Camden today was none other than Chester Cup winner Address Unknown. In second place was Laterly, whose claim to fame is getting his arse beat by Peddlers Cross in a 3-horse beginner chase last year.

November 24, 2013 at 16:36 #459687Nope I ask loads on this thread so much more fun for you to have a go Quadrilla! Also it was you who nailed the last one…
Can’t believe I didn’t pick up Molotof – I spotted him in the result of the Iroquois but didn’t put two and two together – d’huh!
November 24, 2013 at 17:30 #459690OK Thanks Adrian.
Name the UK or Irish Flat Horse who has beaten over 150 other runners this year and never won.
