The Champion Hurdle (generally 7-1) will be savagely competitive but she’s now proven that she has genuine two-mile pace and current form suggests she could be a major player.
The ‘Quevega Hurdle’ (7-2) has always been a bit of a non-event for me but probably represents her best chance of being a Festival winner.
The World Hurdle (7-2) could be fascinating, espicially with the expected improvement from Big Bucks and return to form of At Fishers Cross. From a strictly form point of view she would be right there, but three miles is a step into the unknown and she doesn’t really look as though she’s been campaigned for it.
If she were mine, she’d be heading straight for the Champion Hurdle. It’s where the history is.

January 25, 2014 at 17:42 #465986I think she’d be a cert for the World Hurdle, but she deserves a shot at the big one, even tho it’s much more competitive. I can understand the reservations of the trainer and jockey, as they also have the reigning champion.
January 25, 2014 at 17:44 #465988I agree. She has to run the Champion Hurdle to make history.
But finally it might depend on Quevega’s form. If she was to miss “her” race, surely Annie will be headed towards the Mares Hurdle…
January 25, 2014 at 17:45 #465989I think she is the best 2 miler around.End of.
Whatever she runs in she winsJanuary 25, 2014 at 18:18 #466002She’s a very fine mare who could easily win a Gold Cup one day. But she’s been odds against in just 2 of her races. Today didn’t prove to me that she has the pace for a Champion Hurdle. I have strong doubts she can go fast enough and jump well enough on better ground against hardened Grade 1 horses.
Having said that, I’ve no doubt she’ll go for the Champion Hurdle. This will be a decision made by the owners imo, the Riccis. To them, entering the World Hurdle rather than the Champion would be like shopping at Primark rather than Harrods.
January 25, 2014 at 20:17 #466021If I was the owner of Paddy Power’s sister Annie it would be a shot at the Champion.
If I was the trainer with 100% control then it would still be up in the air as there has been a bit of negativity and talk of an interrupted preparation for Hurricane Fly going into tomorrows race but if all was well with the Hurricane and the other horse with the funny name UDS or something then I’d be incline to go for the World Hurdle.
Personally I hope she goes for the World Hurdle as I’m MTOY’s for the Champion and Annie scares me to death.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
January 25, 2014 at 20:42 #466026Will she go novice chasing next year? I fancy that she will.
January 25, 2014 at 20:45 #466027its lovely when we get good mares, at first id have said run her in the word hurdle however, wouldn’t it be great to win the champion hurdle like dawn run, I just don’t know, what a hard decision for her connections, I wish them luck and her well in whichever route they take

January 25, 2014 at 21:11 #466038Book her an appointment with Frankel?
January 25, 2014 at 21:14 #466039Nice easy pay cheque today but it proved nothing, in my opinion. Quality of horse she was against was some way below what she’d face in a Champion Hurdle.
One of the biggest problems they have is the jockey, as Ruby is unlikely to get off Hurricane Fly. The other Mullins jockeys have no or terrible records at Cheltenham – Patrick Mullins rode Champagne Fever in the bumper for them but is inexperienced at Prestbury Park. Townend has one winner from about fifty rides there.
AP – MTOY or Jezki
Geraghty – probably the other of those twoDavy Russell might be a possible option but aside from Ruby, the only jockey with experience in similar races is really Davey Casey and his Cheltenham record in the last five years is a big, fat duck egg.
She’s an awesome horse. I’d have her in the World Hurdle because she looks to be a chaser and i think the Champion is going to be a frenetic classic, especially if Un De Sceaux lines up.
January 25, 2014 at 23:08 #466058With three possible targets on the dartboard and a list populated largely by egg and spoon races in the win column, I think she’s appalling value for the Champion Hurdle at as low as 5/1
A hype horse for now in my opinion, and I wouldn’t touch her with a barge pole for the Champion. Can anyone seriously say that 5/1 for her is any semblance of anything other than insanity, in the face of a two time winner available at 10/3?
Hurricane Fly runs tomorrow and a good performance from him will make the odds about Annie require her name to have be pre-fixed with an F to represent the credibility of 5/1 for the Champion!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 25, 2014 at 23:15 #466062Go for the Champion surely – the Stayers’ is a consolation to say the least, and I’m not even commenting on the cursed Mares race which should be abolished.

However there is no chance Mullins will take on the best horse he has trained (The Fly), so yet another let down it is.
January 25, 2014 at 23:21 #466064I will strip off naked and roll around in a pile stinging nettles and film the whole thing and post it on here if Annie races in the mares*.
*This does not count if Quevega is a non runner.

And I’ll wrestle you naked in a paddling pool of strawberry (I don’t like raspberry) jelly if she wins this year’s Champion Hurdle*.
*This does not count if Hurricane Fly, The New One, My Tent or Yours, Jezkie, Our Connor or Ernie who pulled the fastest milk cart in the west are all transferred to the ownership of a Mr B.Curley and ermmm rested for a couple of years!

But her form with Zarkander puts her at the approximately the same level as The New One and My Tent or Yours, so she should be at the same price as those two.
January 26, 2014 at 04:13 #466075I believe that Willie Mullins decides where his horses run, not the owner, not the jockey. If you don’t like it the gate is always open. If Hurricane Fly travels over safely he will defend his crown. Likewise Quevega(correct for spelling) will go for the mares race and that leaves the long distance race for Annie. Simple as that. Annie will be the new kid on the block until such time as HF is either retired or vanquished.
Incidentally I believe that it is a mistake to give wee Anthony two bites of the apple. - AuthorPosts
