Really sad to read about the passing of Andy , and my condolences go to his loved ones.
In my view one of the most stylish jockeys of all time.
His balance and grace were exceptional , with the shortest stirrup leathers that I have ever seen. Even managed to win the National on Maori Venture.
If you compare his style to some of the high profile jockeys currently riding , it is quite embarassing , in some instances.March 11, 2022 at 15:26 #1586490NH version of Pigott with his bum sticking up in the air!
Been many a time Turnell would land a top hurdle at 25/1.
Favourite though was him on Bird’s Nest.
Just reminds me of those days, Bula, Lanzarote, Comedy of Errors, Night Nurse.
March 11, 2022 at 18:52 #1586526I was at Doncaster in January 1978 – he was unseated at the fourth (open ditch) on Tree Tangle in the Mansion House Chase and narrowly beaten on Birds Nest by Night Nurse and Jonjo O’Neill in the Yorkshire Hurdle.
All of which I took completely for granted – I thought days like that would last forever.
Different world now.
RIP.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 11, 2022 at 19:03 #1586529Very sad indeed to hear of Andy Turnell’s passing. It’s all been said by Coggy and
GSP, he was an exceptional jockey and a great trainer. RIP Andy, there were very few
that could lace his boots.March 12, 2022 at 11:19 #1586637Condolences to his family and friends.
A jockey from my early days in racing.
People here mentioning some of the very good horses of the past.Comedy of Errors was perhaps the first horse I took to my heart but also recall the others GSP writes about.Would any of the so called top hurdlers of today hold a candle to those halcyon times?
good luck to allMarch 12, 2022 at 13:29 #1586655Beacon Light was one of my favs. I wonder if espmadrid has a video of the pair of them winning the Royal Doulton at Haydock in 1979. It’s about the only year of the race I can’t find on youtube.
March 12, 2022 at 17:07 #1586689It was a Golden Age, but Faugheen, Annie P, and Honeysuckle would have been competitive in any era
March 12, 2022 at 23:58 #1586745Just watched the video of Tree Tangle beating Grangewood Girl with Tingle Creek in 3rd. Watching it reminded me of how much I used to enjoy National Hunt racing and Andy Turnell as a jockey was just a joy to watch he had style and later went on to prove himself as a top trainer and true gentleman.. R.I.P. ⚘
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 13, 2022 at 00:18 #1586746What happened to him between 1999 and 2005?
Very few runners and only 2, 2, 5, 1 and 2 winners a season.March 13, 2022 at 11:15 #1586814He spent the large part of those years trying to become a flat trainer. He did manage a fourth in the Derby with a colt called Jelani. That one and a number of others were owned by Mrs Hollowood and her husband was also an owner with the yard. His best horse was Bajan Blue, who won a few times on the flat, but had his best win for Turnell in the Swinton Hurdle.
March 17, 2022 at 11:02 #1587982As said NH version of Lester.
Very stylish rider who got the
job done.
All these years later. I can’t
think of any jump jockey since
who has come close to riding so
short.March 17, 2022 at 11:21 #1587987From memory, Tommy Carmody rode just as short when he came over from Ireland to ride for the Dickinsons.
Just seen a picture online that seems to confirm it.
March 17, 2022 at 11:29 #1587989Thanks for that.
March 17, 2022 at 17:05 #1588254I agree with isinglass that Carmody also rode exceptionally short. He was another great stylist , and was brilliant in a finish.
