Quote: With Alner still in intensive care following a car crash, assistant trainer Nick Mitchell was delighted to see The Listener regain the winning thread.
He said: "It’s a good tonic for the boss and Robert had the nurse on the phone halfway up the run-in."
"Bring on Denman," he added. "I can’t think of another horse in England or Ireland I’d rather take him on with" end quote
Is this guy for real?
Perhaps he never noticed their horse was beaten by about 2 fences by Kauto Star in the Gold Cup
I Think I know which one every jockey in the country would rather be on against Denman in Ireland.Talk about getting carried away by Denman’s performance.
Sure "The Listner" has won a decent race very easily and by a long way, but this guy has gone completely off his rocker.
Can hear Alner now on the phone……..Oi Nick you talk to the press again I’ll come round there and boot ya in the goolies ya dumb twit!
December 9, 2007 at 17:37 #129745Was the Gold Cup a true reflection of The Listener’s merits last year, or is he better judged on his Lexus/Hennessy form and on what he did today. Will be interesting to see what tactics are adopted on The Listener and Denman, both are probably best being allowed to bowl along and take advantage of their bold jumping. Given that the Listener has occasionally put in the odd howler when not meeting one absoutely 100%, I’d have a concern that he could end up on the deck.
December 9, 2007 at 17:47 #129747He’s of course always going to talk up his own, but it will require a going of ‘Heavy, marshland places’ on GC day before The Listener will be good enough to make the frame IMO.
December 9, 2007 at 17:58 #129749The actual quote was "Bring on Denman, I can’t think of another horse in England or in Ireland I’d rather take him on with"
"I’m not saying we’ll beat him but it will be soft ground & it will be interesting"
We all know that realistically if Denman is as good as he appeared to be should win but you can’t blame Roberts assistant for his exuberance & obvious pleasure at the resounding victory today.December 9, 2007 at 18:14 #129752Wouldn’t dream off it we all get carried away. I wasn’t really comparing The Listeners gold cup form though…my pioint was that on his very best form + 10 lbs and bag of sugar and a rocket up his ass he wouldn’t beat kauto Star and this guy would rather have The Listner than him…….He should be carried away……by men in white coats

The Listener wouldn’t stay the Gold Cup trip in a horse box, hence his dropping down to 2.5 miles today.
December 9, 2007 at 22:31 #129783We’ll see on 28-Dec I suppose.
December 10, 2007 at 00:36 #129789I think beef or salmon has a better chance of getting close to denman… hope the great old boy puts up a good show, although neither he nor TL should trouble denman.
December 10, 2007 at 00:45 #129790FoF,
It’s quite obvious that you are a big KS fan, and you think that Denman’s performance was completely overrated.
You remind me of a true passionate football fan who thinks their own team will beat anyone, while dismissing the merits of the opposition.
The only advice I would try to give is, think with your head, and not with your heart.

December 10, 2007 at 11:17 #129818As we were discussing an assistant trainer’s comments and not questioning Denman’s ability I don’t get the point of brining this up again
However I will answer you.
First off I am thinking with my head and not my heart and very much so.
People seem to have forgotten just how good Kauto Star is. They should look back to last year in the Tingle Creek, just as an example out of a hat, and remind themselves. He treated a class Arkle winner with complete and utter contempt. That truly was an awesome display from a young horse.
He goes on and wins 6 top races including the Gold Cup proving he is one of the best we have seen in a long long time. Then they make Denman fav for the Gold Cup…who’s takin the piss then
I think he is a different class to Denman and even if he beats the Listner it wont convince me otherwise.
The rest I have written in another 2 threads and basically I don’t want to repeat myself.

Please accept my apologies FoF, I thought the above comment (in this thread) was yours

December 10, 2007 at 13:11 #129854Methinks Fist Of Fury protests too much. Sure Kauto Star is the real deal, but he under estimates the ever improving Denman at his peril. That’s all I’m saying.

December 10, 2007 at 17:13 #129883I read the ‘Bring on Denman’ comment not as dismissive of Kauto Star or to imply Denman is undisputedly the best horse in training, but simply that Denman’s Christmas target has always been the Lexus, as has The Listener’s, so I read it more as looking forward to the two clashing in their next race. If KS had been aimed at the Lexus, I’ve no doubt the comment would have been ‘Bring on Kauto Star’.

Mike read between the lines FFS…………Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit my friend.
A lot of people got carried away with Denman’s performance and I was using it to show how idiotic the guys quote was…..I was not having a go at Denman.
You on the other hand have said absolutely nothing constructive about anything. So I take it you came here just to have a go at me?
Go ahead……knock yourself out but at least reply with some sort of an opinion on the subject at hand…..Even if it’s “My name is Mike and I love Denman” at least it would be something.
If you can’t manage that, we will carry you until your brain develops and you can write your own words and not copy and paste mines.

What he said was there is no horse in England or Ireland he would rather take on Denman with. I could think of one if you can’t
If he said I think The Listner has a great chance of beating Denman and over this trip I wouldn’t swap him for anything………that’s acceptable, but what he said was just plain silly.
December 10, 2007 at 19:55 #129900If he feels that a proven front-running heavy-ground specialist with course form is the only thing that can beat Denman, then it’s a perfectly valid opinion.
December 10, 2007 at 20:03 #129901First FoF, I am not having a go at anyone – pleas accept my apologies if you think this is the case, because believe me it isn’t.
Secondly, if you think I’ve said absolutely nothing constructive about anything, then again I offer my apologies. I’ve actually said quite a lot about certain subjects, including about Denman. I’ve even replied to some of your posts and posed some valid questions, that you have failed to reply to. So maybe it’s you not reading what I say, rather than me not having anything constructive to say about anything.
I also won’t be saying "I am Mike and I love Denman" because I don’t love Denman – I have never said I do, but I have said on a few ocassions that I was very impressed with his performance last time out – maybe you missed that.
For the record, I’m a massive Kauto Star fan, who wouldn’t be – and at this stage, he is still the one I would want to be on in the Gold Cup. So actually we share the same opinions – does that mean your brain isn’t developed either?

All joking aside, I apologise if you think I’m criticising you because that’s not the case. I just have a completely different opinion to you regarding peoples reactions to Denmans performance. You have stated many times now that you think people have over reacted, I on the other hand, don’t think they have.
All the best,
Mike
