My thanks to Botherless because without those comments I wouldn’t have known about the so sad death of Ancient Times, a favourite horse.
He should have his own thread, hence this posting.

March 23, 2014 at 18:57 #473024Long-standing TRF contributors will remember that I was involved in a syndicate that had a couple of horses with Philip Kirby.
I visited the yard on one occasion and had a wonderful expereince, with a trip to the gallops and a stable tour. I found Phil to be an honest and approachable individual, and met him several more times at the racetrack when the horses competed.
One occasion stood out at Warwick. Goldan Jess looked a picture of health in the saddling box, where Phil was once again very welcoming and open. Jess finished a respectable second (I backed him at 12/1 without the winning favourite), and upon taking him back to the stables, Phil insisted I meet him in the owners and trainers bar.
We spoke for a good thirty minutes (I didn’t even offer to buy him a drink with my winnings, but I had a severe eye infection at the time and medication kicked in, so I had an excuse!). I truly apprecaited the time he spent talking with me.
Regular visitor’s to their (Phil and his wife, Philippa) website will notice the pride they take in re-homing retired horses and updates are often given on their lives after racing.

I was delighted with the success of Platinum in the Old Borough Cup and even advised many of the punters in my shop to have a few quid on him!
It comes as no surprise to see the yard progressing and long may it continue. R.I.P Oz.
