Should you own a Group One middle distance mare (10furlongs) and wished to breed a Derby horse would you select Galileo or Frankel?
January 16, 2014 at 20:01 #465061The above was prompted by an article in the Racing Post re the bookmakers going crazy about Frankel’s first foal.
January 16, 2014 at 20:18 #465063Personnally would not consider Frankel if I was looking to breed a Derby winner. Would go to Galileo.
Sea the Stars is a more obvious choice than Frankel

I’m to understand that if all else is equal, so too are the stud fees…
If that is the case then Galileo without a doubt as he’s a) a proven sire and b) a proven Derby sire.
Should, by 2019, Frankel sire a few top class 12f performers, I’d be more inclined to throw my mare in his direction.
January 17, 2014 at 23:16 #465181Temperament plays a big part, if I wanted to breed a Derby winner would not send a hard pulling 10f mare to Frankel (probably end up not getting 12f). On the other hand a lazy, lethargic 10f mare would probably be better off going to Frankel than Galileo (with latter’s progeny probably ending up a stayer)…
But "all else (including temperament) being equal"…
If I had a "10 furlong" or less mare and wanted to breed a Derby winner I’d go for Galileo.
If I had an 11f+ mare and wanted to breed a Derby winner I’d go for Frankel.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 18, 2014 at 06:24 #465205We don’t know if Frankel is going to be a "dud" at stud. He could be like Secretariat and only show his true class in his daughter’s offspring. And we don’t really know if he’ll get classic-distance runners. Galileo is the best sire in all of Europe, and he has sired two Derby winners already. This is a no-brainer.
