Supposing Alderbrook was gelded after winning the champion hurdle which meant he had no option but to stay in training it meant he would have faced Istabraq in defence of his champion hurdle crown. What a spetacle that would have been? Who would of won the 1998 champion hurdle if Alderbrook stayed in training? Does anyone think he would of been good enough to stop the great Istabraq?
November 28, 2008 at 03:07 #192714No.
November 28, 2008 at 03:21 #192718Alderbrook would have no chance against Istabraq! If you were to price the last 20 winners of the champion hurdle against each other in a make believe scenario Istabraq would be 3/1 fav Alderbrook 10/1

November 28, 2008 at 04:16 #192731Don’t think Alderbrook would have troubled Istabraq.
Whether Moscow Flyer would have given Istabraq a race in 2001 though is an fascinating hypothetical question.

I always think if that festival had gone ahead we might never have seen Moscow jump a fence.

Alderbrook won the champion hurdle in 1995 so he wouldn’t have been defending his crown. He lost that to Collier Bay in 1996 who lost it to Make A Stand in 1997.
November 28, 2008 at 05:27 #192747Is the assumption out there that Istabraq would have been vastly superior to Morley Street. How did Timeform see it. Smashing turn of foot had Morley Street.
Beech Road from memory won an above average Champion but I guess he’s been forgotten too.
November 28, 2008 at 05:30 #192748Two Breeders Cup Steeplechases for Morley Street too Spitfire.
November 28, 2008 at 06:51 #192758Unbelievers!
(Alderbrook would have had no chance on the prevailing ground, without even considering how good Istabraq was)
November 29, 2008 at 00:41 #192968Alderbrook beat a really high class field in 1995 very impressively. Large Action was a high class hurdler and Alderbrook flew passed him up the hill. I’ve always thaught that he’s the one other Champion Hurdler that I’ve seen who had enough ability to have given Istabraq a race. However, the way Istabraq destroyed his rivals in 1998 makes it hard to believe he could have been troubled.
With regards to Morley Street. Aintree. 2m 4f Hurdle. Good ground. Morley Street vs Istabraq. That would be interesting.
November 29, 2008 at 01:16 #192972I backed both Alderbrook and Istabraq and I can say categorically that had they met, I am certain Istabraq would have beaten Alderbrook without much trouble. He was superior in my opinion.
