Did anyone see Alastair Downs’ column in either monday or tuesday racing post? It was a feature about getting back from the Arc. I was wondering i someone could either post it or email me a link to where is may be. I think he is a fantastic writer, and certainly a great characher on the racecourse.

October 14, 2007 at 18:06 #119458I used to think he was very good but he does tend to recycle his pieces, and I have heard stories that he isn’t the nicest of persons. Only hearsay of course, or you might even call it gossip, but we do love a bit of goss don’t we!

October 14, 2007 at 18:25 #119462He always comes across as a nice chap but not the sort you would get on the wrong side of though. I like his dry sarcastic wit though.
He will probably be filling in for Big Mac while he’s in America in a few weeks let’s see how he comes across during the five weeks.
October 14, 2007 at 18:46 #119466met him at Punchestown [where he’s at his most relaxed] and he chatted to us for ages albeit giving us the worst tip ever for a later race! you can only judge people by how they are with you and he was lovely.

Don’t worry, James. He’ll be repeating it next year. And the year after. And the…etc

A friend of mine approached AD and Claude Duval at the Arc a few years ago asking to get autographs on his racecard (Clare Balding had already happily signed it). Both Alistair and Claude were the worse for drink. Claude obliged but Fat Al told him to F*** Off.
My friend has the habit of poor timing and is a bit of a boring git but he didn’t deserve that.October 15, 2007 at 14:01 #119583I used to work for a large credit card company some years ago.
One of my colleagues had him call up to pay his bill. My colleague took his payment in full, then AD made a ‘large’ contribution from his account to either the Tsunami Fund or Comic Relief, I can’t remember which – but judging by that little story, he seems kind hearted.

Presumably you got the sack for breaching client confidentiality. Good job he wasn’t ordering porn dvds.
October 15, 2007 at 14:42 #119604No, because I didn’t break any client confidentiality whatsoever DJ

He made a public donation, rather than an anonymous one, which meant his name was allowed to be printed in the company magazine on the "we would like to thank" page

ColinAs you v’e only "heard" it it means absoloutley nothing. Martin Pipe was supposed to be a bit aggressive but did that take anything away from the man?
My only meeting with Martin Pipe was before Welsh National Day a few years ago. He was chatting to (the other) David Johnson and I asked him to sign my racecard which he did very willingly. Without being asked he also gave me a tip for one of his horses which came a close second at a decent price. This was just one meeting and I’m sure we all have our off days but he went up in my estimation on that day.

Now when I am under the influence, I become the nicest guy on earth, my kids do be praying I come home absoluetly sossled, as I am generous to a fault, they take advantage of my good nature and raid my wallet.
October 21, 2007 at 11:31 #120771Have just heard that Alastair Down is going to be one of the speakers at the Midland Racing Club NH preview along with Ian Williams and a couple of professional/non professional punters. This is on 13th November at Stirchley Utd. Working Mens Club in Birmingham, details are on the Crottly website [www.crottly.co.uk – sorry, don’t know how to cut and paste things]. Last years preview was excellent – Chris Pitt is usually chairperson and it’s a highly entertaining/informative event. mo
November 11, 2007 at 23:49 #124308Just to remind everyone that it’s this Tuesday, so if anyone’s in the Birmingham area check the Crottly website…thanks mo
November 14, 2007 at 23:44 #124829I find Alistair Down a rather pathetic individual.
As our young men give their lives and limbs for god and country in Iraq and Afghanistan, we have to put up with his sel fpiteous nonsense about having a drink problem. Yeah, mate you really look like it.
And his ponderous, flowery 6th form A Level writing style makes me want to chuck.
Get a grip racing fraternity – Al Down is an attantion seeking media tart.
