Ian Senior pretty much sums it up there.
I’m guessing someone calling themselves Cymro doesn’t need to be told this but Ffos Las means ‘blue ditch’, or so I’m told. Not that anyone would call it that in a million years.
July 17, 2023 at 19:43 #1655722I have never heard Musselburgh racecourse referred to as Edinburgh, in my lifetime.
But I can confirm, because I drove past it yesterday, that there is a sign with Gosforth next to a racehorse icon, at the side of the A1 near Newcastle 😊.
July 17, 2023 at 19:53 #1655723Wiki: “Musselburgh….was officially known as ‘Edinburgh Racecourse’ – and referred to as such in the English press – until the beginning of 1996, but was widely referred to as ‘Musselburgh’ in Scotland long before that and was widely referred to as ‘Musselburgh’ in the racing pages of Scottish newspapers.”

The more I know the less I understand.
July 17, 2023 at 21:44 #1655734I seem to recall that Ripon was known as The Garden racecourse in Go Racing in Yorkshire marketing. To do with the floral features around the paddock area.
July 17, 2023 at 21:55 #1655738You quite often hear Galway referred to as Ballybrit racecourse.

July 17, 2023 at 22:30 #1655745That doesn’t happen often – Gladders has obviously been overdoing the obscure cheeses I’ve never heard of as he was a bit slow out of the gates there.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
July 18, 2023 at 00:16 #1655753As a number of racecourse name changes have been given, it is probably worth mentioning Chelmsford City formerly being Great Leighs.
Re the point runandskip84 raised about the change of name from Liverpool to Aintree, I don’t recall it being “announced” in the media in the same way as the changes to Devon & Exeter and Edinburgh.
If anyone knows more on exactly when it happened and why, I would be interested to know too! I believe it was in the early 90s.
July 18, 2023 at 04:02 #1655759My Dad used to tell stories of big European nights at Spurs in 60s , teams like Hajduk Split, Red Star Belgrade etc .
Down the road from there he used to also go to Alexandra Palace that he said was called The Frying Pan as they went out and round a tight bend and back the opposite way .
Similar i think to the old Phoenix ParkJuly 18, 2023 at 05:13 #1655761I don’t disagree with Wikipedia! But from my perspective, being from Scotland, it’s always been Musselburgh 😊.
Re Cork (Mallow), the racecourse is ten minutes from the town of Mallow. I remember signage that mentioned both names in various places.
July 18, 2023 at 06:24 #1655762Marlingford says Great Leighs as the original moniker for Chelmsford, of course how did we all skip that.
I vaguely remember C4 racing talking about Musselburgh and I believe Archipenko is correct, it was unofficially called Edinburgh and it was a sort of cultural thing it should be Musselburgh. The more I know the less I understand.
